Glossy Gaming monitors?

I'm currently using a fairly old 24" 1920x1200 glossy Acer monitor.  It's not bad, but it's not great and I'm having a hard time finding a decent replacement.  I can't stand matte finish (I have to ues them at work - Dell u2211) and I briefly tried a QNIX QX2710 matte (they sent me the wrong version on accident).  Here is what I'd like ideally:

1) Glossy or semi-glossy (very very very light AG)

2) 1920x1200+ resolution (I'd love 1440p)

3) 120hz (native or overclock)

4) No input lag

I don't care about viewing angles or color accuracy (black levels and picture clarity are more important to me), the sparkle on the Dell's at work is really bad and gives me a headache frequently.  I game a lot, FPS and competitive online games like League of Legends, so the input lag is pretty important to me.  I am the kind of gamer who notices lag on wireless mice, I resisted switching from CRT to LCD for a long time (I still have a 19" Samsung CRT in my closet) and it took me a long time to adjust to LCD.

I think the only monitor that really matches my needs is the Yamasaki Catleap 2B, the Overlord TempestOC or the QNIX/XSTAR 2710.  I wouldn't mind a TN 120-144hz if I could get a 24" with 1920x1200 and a glossy screen, but I don't think that monitor exists.  Everything is either smaller (1080p) or matte finish, and even the older 120hz that were glossy got discontinued and seem to be unavailable, so even if I was willing to drop to 1080p I don't think a glossy 120hz monitor exists right now.

Am I screwed unless I go with a Korean panel?  I know eventually someone will come out with a 120hz 1440p monitor, but I'm not even convinced a glossy option will hit the market these days :(

There are no 120hz 1440p monitors.

Could consider:

The requirements you have are not popular (because the majority makes it so...sadface) so there isn't exactly many options available anywhere.

I'm from the USA, I considered the BENQ but the matte finish appears to be pretty strong and I can't deal with it.  The Dell at work (u2211) makes my eyes hurt (eye strain) and often gives me headaches.  The whites are noticably sparkling and I can't be sure if that's because of the panel or the anti-glare.  No one has the BENQ locally so I can't look at it before I buy one.

The Acer H236HLbid, although it is a 60Hz IPS panel.  I don't know of any glossy 120Hz monitors, and I know there are no 120Hz/144Hz monitors above 1920x1080.

That's what I was afraid of.  I was hoping that in my research and looking over the past few months I had missed one.  I know Samsung and Asus had 120hz glossy monitors at one time that have since been discontinued, I have not seen a single lightboost monitor that was glossy though.  I guess I'll just get another Korean panel and hope it turns out alright, it just sucks that you're essentially rolling the dice hoping you don't get a bad one.  The matte one they sent me was perfect except I can't stand the matte finish :(

Yeah.  I've heard the ASUS PB278Q has a pretty light semi-gloss finish, and the older Dell xxx11 monitors were known for having very aggressive AG.  I haven't used the PB278Q myself though but that might be something for you to look at.  Again though, not 120Hz.

That's what I bought from Amazon, they just sent me a Matte one instead of a Glossy...which is too bad because it had no backlight bleed, no dead pixels and hit 96hz without any problem on my old tower.  I didn't get a chance to test 120hz with my new tower since I boxed it up after I saw it was matte finish to send back.  I'm trying to find a pixel perfect version from someone who guarantees no dead pixels and everyone I've contacted has told me they are out of stock...even one of the big sellers who still has glossy pixel perfect listed on Ebay said they had none in stock :(

Yea, I've slowly seen all those glossy listings change to **MATTE**, specified in way it seems like a new product line.

P.S. : you should have sent it to me!

LOL.  Well I still have it at home, but Fedex is picking it up to send back to Korea tonight :P

I thought about turning around and re-selling it, a perfect one could probably command a premium but I didn't want to have to hassle with it and if something happened to it in shipping I'd be screwed.

I guess shipping back is at your own cost ? How much is it ?

Nah, the guy tried to cancel my return but I put in an A-Z claim and he sent me a pre-paid label.  If he hadn't I was going to get a refund AND get to keep the monitor (at which point it would have become a second screen).  He told me he paid $130 in shipping total, but that's his business rate, for me it would probably have been that much for one way.   I would have been reselling it if I had to pay for shipping, nothing wrong with the monitor, like I said I just didn't want to deal with the hassle of selling it.

Trust me, selling it to me at a good price wouldn't have been a hassle.

Anyway, keep us updated on the product and the seller when you find your perfect match.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got my glossy XSTAR DP2710 last night.  I ended up buying three different monitors before I finally got my hands on the one I wanted.  The original one I sent back, the second I bought the seller informed me that were out of stock and the third (from Hulustar on Ebay) shipped me a glossy perfect pixel since they were out of the regular glossy.  It has very minor backlight bleed and 3 dead pixels (I'll probably get a partial refund) but they are in the upper right hand area and aren't really noticable so I'll probably keep it rather than chance getting a worse one.

I overclocked it to 110hz without any trouble, get a few scanlines at 120hz in certain games (not all) so I might play with the timings a bit...overall it looks great.  I'm glad I didn't settle for the matte version, this one is what I really wanted.  I'll be posting a full review in a few days after I've had a chance to get it calibrated properly and play some games.  Last night I barely had time to look it over...
