Need help choosing a cooler for my Ryzen system

The Third Thomas

So I want to upgrade my current AMD Phenom II x4 965 to a Ryzen 5 1600x, and I've read a million articles already, but I just can't decide what to get.

The biggest problem is AM4 compatibility and my case.

I have a Sharkoon t28 red case, and on the site it lists the max CPU cooler height is 160mm. I have an MSI 1070 gaming X in there, which is 140mm, and that's already stretching it. (with the PCI-E connectors is barely fits)

As far as I've seen, there are almost no AM4 compatible CPU coolers that fit in my case, since they're all 160 mm or more. And there are almost no Top-Down coolers of good quality within my price range. ($40)

Does anyone have any tips for good coolers, since I'm almost tempted to just get the Ryzen 5 1600 just to get the stock cooler with it and be done with this.

Just use the stock cooler that it comes with, it works great and looks good too.

The problem is that the 1600x doesn't come with a stock cooler, the 1600 does. So I need to get a cooler for the 1600x if I want to be able to use the XFR or overclock it.

Buy the 1600 it is the exact same processor but it comes with a free stock cooler, so win-win

I had already seen the Hyper 212 evo, but I thought that with 159 mm I wouldn't want to take the risk.

The other one seems pretty good tho, thanks!

Isn't the 1600 clocked .4 GHz slower than the 1600x?

Why don't you just go for a cheap water cooler like this?  I used this cooler in a client build and it's extremely quiet and keeps the CPU well under 50 degrees.

Yes, but it's not worth the extra $10-$20 you'd have to spend.

There is something called overclock that null's this difference.

I only have 1 rear fan and a closed top, so no place for the radiator there, won't that be a problem?

Okay fair enough, gotta learn how to do that first, but if the X isn't really worth it, I might do this. Saves me 20 on the CPU and 40 on a cooler.

Was planning on overclocking the 1600x as well, but if it's not worth it...

The performance difference is negligible, stuff you could only see on synthetic benchmarks after you overclock both the 1600 and 1600x therefore yes you will cheap up a good 60ish dollars and end up with the same thing on your hand, with less hassle of installing custom coolers.

The radiator is a 120mm, meaning that you could mount it on the rear or the front.

The T28 has 160mm of clearance for a cpu cooler. A cooler that's 160mm or under will fit.

Asides from the 212 Evo, there should be plenty of other coolers that fit just fine.

Where are you shopping/located?
