IBM AS/400e Series and IBM AS/400e Servers. Need some info on them.

Obtained two IBM servers for free, one is an IBM AS/400e Series and the other an IBM AS/400e. Both are likely in working condition; were working at the time they were taken.

I don't specialise in servers so this is new to me. They are probably from they late 80s to 90s era, but that is as much as I can tell you.

I would appreciate any info on these and would like to know what it is I have :/

even if they work, "working" is probably more along the range of educational purposes, than actual functionality.

could consider donating them to a school?

*cringe* I believe these were part of the IBM iSeries solution which is an old Unix system called AS400.

We still use this system at our work, but thankfully on much newer servers with SSD san storage.

I believe these were also used for Lotus Domino (IBM's version of Exchange email).

Maybe they can go to a history museum? lol

Most schools wouldn't have much use for one, unless they could work it into a classroom exercise.

my teacher had a collection of computer parts from the 80s until a DOA board for one of the current school computers, organised by launch date, kind of as a visual "evolution of computers"

Indeed, that kind of thing might be useful. But not all schools have the space to store that kind of stuff, nor the will to actually use it in any meaningful way.

The OP should do lots of AS400 research, and maybe look into coding or running something off the server, if he intends on keeping it. Otherwise, it's literally a paper weight.

  • 2 years later...

Those servers are old school, but are still very cool. if you still have them what would you consider getting rid of one for?
