Why not get the XPS13 9550 6560U last gen one? They go for like 1k for 512gb with the Iris Pro graphics.

Other options are appreciated but I would like them to be of similar or higher caliber as the xps or surface.

Not the Razer Blade. I would go with the XPS

Stealth has some thermal issues, and build issues with internal components( razer uses cheap components). get the xps, surface pro 5 is good but not worth it for the price.

please note that the vrm issues extends to the skylake AND kaby lake models as people who have done teardowns have shown that Razer has done exaactly 0 changes and just swapped out the CPU and GPU chip for newer things. The underlying layout has not changed.

ok. I'll scratch the stealth from the list. I'm not considering the Pro 5 because its not in my budget anyway. But how about the pro 4? It is a similar price to the xps for the same specs? I don't mind getting the XPS but I want to know why I shouldn't get the pro 4.

sorry for the confusion. I meant surface pro as in what microsoft calls the surface pro 5 in that post. The surface pro 4 is cheaper than the xps 13 that I'm looking at so it's an option but the xps that pendragon showed me is a little more powerful.

It's cheaper, and the new pen is backwards compatible.  Honestly that's it.  They aren't that much different.

It would actually.  It's certainly capable of everything he wants to do, with the added bonus of being more powerful.  But he doesn't want it, and that's fine.  I'm not trying to convince him.

you're killing me. What makes it better though? From what I can tell, it trades Iris graphics for a 512gb storage. I am fine with 256gb.

surface still has its problems, the laptop you suggested had shit display, build quality, battery life and most importantly it does not fit OPs needs. "being more powerful" is not always the main point of a device.

but it doesn't trade graphics...it has the 6560U aka Skylake Iris Pro with 512gb of storage, 16gb of ram AND cheaper. 

 

also covered by dell warranty until the end of this year.
