Product Key Needed?

Fellow Techies,

Someone may know better than I do. It is now 2017, do I have to have a product key for Win 10? I know it use to be that you didn't need one. What about now-a-days? Thank you in advance.

Instructions for frustration management:  

1) Sit at desk.   2) Repeatedly slam forehead against desk.

How is it now worth it? Plus Kinguin charged a second time on a canceled card. Kinda fishy if you ask me. G2A did not do that.

I mean since when did windows suddenly become free? Of course you need a key.

 

Before it was only you didnt need one if you had bought a previous eligible version of windows and for 1 year you were allowed to upgrade for free. That ended a long time ago.

I had used Win 10 for a while without a key (about three months). I bought and used a key later on to be safe. I had read back in 2016 that they weren't requiring it, that was during the free upgrade. I figured since the free upgrades aren't allowed anymore, the free use is viewed the same. Better to ask than to assume.
