Hypothetical PSU for R9 290

Mooshi

So, we all know that recommended wattage for graphics cards and actual power consumption are almost exclusively never related for real world use. I do have a 750w PSU that's 2 years old, but that has been showing signs of instability and needs to go. (It's a Cougar unit I got on sale) While looking up PSUs, I see this for 85 dollars.

Can't go wrong with a 80+ Gold Seasonic, right? I was wondering if 550w is fine for a single R9 290 in the future + my sig rig. I have no desire to run a multi gpu set up so the "What if you wanna crossfire later?" question doesn't apply. I wanna get an R9 290 later on and use my existing system. Other planned upgrades include a fan controller to handle 7 fans and another HDD or SSD, but that's about it.

Is 550w enough?

I'm going to say a 650 watt to be safe.

AMD's 290's are power hungry, 600-650w, also punch it in a wattage calculator to make sure

So for around the same price I could find a 650 80+ Bronze unit. I take it this would be a better option if I want an R9 290 later, eh? :P

well I do think it's enough if you'll not overclock much above 1100mhz

MHz doesn't matter. Voltage does.

550 Watts can make it, depends on the rest of your system.

yeap but when it start to get above 1100... you'll need more voltage + TDP etc.... or have a huge luck and get a 89% asic quality that runs  at 1200 with 1,18 v

Overclocked Sandy Bridge CPU, 16GB of ram @ 1.5v, 7 fans (loaded Define R4), single SSD, blu-ray player and the graphics card -- pretty much the system.

Not really. Depends how well binned is your chip.

Edit: Found this that makes me feel confident in the 550w unit.

Your system with a R9 290 system will draw about 400W max.

Not bad. Seems like the Seasonic unit will make it.

Seasonic is a very good brand.

Yep. I'd trust the Seasonic to deliver the maximum rated power.

A 550W unit is perfectly fine; considering it's a 80 PLUS Gold rated and a very well-made Seasonic unit, you're solid (this accounts for CPU and GPU overclocking).

Not really. Depends how well binned is your chip.

putting the ASS in ASSASSIN

you are using binned in the wrong context, binned means it's tested to a degree.

what you mean is that if you have a good chip, you can use stock voltage while still maintaining a good overclock, that doesn't mean necessarily that it was binned to achieve that, rather he just won the silicon lottery

A 650w unit would give that extra bit of headroom, but I think this PSU will serve my purposes. Thanks for the input, guys! :D
