Is 8GB really needed? (1080p)

Nocte

Hello,

I know this has been asked a few times already, but I could not find too many recent posts about this.

I am torn between a Sapphire RX 580 4GB (230 EUR) and a Sapphire RX 580 8GB (280 EUR). Now, is the 50 EUR worth the extra 4GB? Is it really going to bottleneck, before the GPU's capabilities max out?

I am going to pair the GPU with a 144Hz 1080p monitor, so I am not concerned about higher resolutions.

Any input is appreciated!

The most recent game that I am playing right now is Overwatch, but I would consider getting some newer ones such as Call of Duty WW2 once they come out.

No, it's not for 1080p. Note that the 8GB model has faster memory, which is the main cause of performance difference you see in benchmarks.

Buy RX480 8GB, problem solved.

RX480s are more expensive in Italy than the 580s... Don't ask me why.

Personally I don't think that it's worth so much money on a 1080p display.

just told my friend to get the 4GB model instead of the 8Gb one last week.

Hrm... Either way I'd recommend 8GB for future proofing. You don't need 8GB right now but it's gonna be nice a couple years down the road.

How much of a difference does it make? As long as I can run Overwatch at 144fps (on low) and other games at 80ish I am more than happy.

Isn't the card going to be obsolete once you need those 8GB though?

EDIT: with obsolete I mean the card is going to bottleneck itself, rather than the VRAM.

Not worth the extra 50 euro IMO.

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

more mem = higher resolution quality(AA,textures etc)

so some games with better visuals(large texture maps) require and demand more vram

I would pay to extra just for future proofing, you want your games to look the best.

Yes I would highly recommend 8 gb of vram, I own a gtx 1070 and I went into watch dogs 2 and it shows how much vram is used and on the highest preset I was using 6.5 GB of vram at 1080p!

Well watch dogs is the best example of how not to optimize your game.

Also programs just tend to use what they get. So why clear the VRAM or Memory in general, if you still have 40% of free space?

With less Memory there will be more switching of data that is safed within it, but that won't impact performance at all.

Thats at least my experience.

Go for ssd much video memory as you can afford. With games requiring more and more video memory you'll be be grateful for the 8Gb as you won't have to turn down the details as much for a while longer

I'm able to play Doom on ultra with my RX 480 8gb and it's using 5.2Gb of memory and I'm getting framerates of between 90 and 110 at 1080p

CPU: Intel Core i7 6790x | Motherboard: Asus ROG Rampage V Extreme X99 | Graphics Card: EVGA 1080ti FTW3 | RAM: 32Gb Corsair Vengeance | | PSU: Cooler Master 1200W Platinum | Case: Lian Li Lancool 2 | Cooling: Corsair 360mmm AIO
