Best anti virus?

I've been using mcafee and I've been told that it's not a good anti virus. So the question came up, what is the best anti virus. I don't want an anti virus that cost money. I won't go over $10 or so for an anti virus.

Best Antivirus actually, the windows 10 internal one, combined with good common sense and a good adblocker for your browser.

 

The best antivirus isn't worth anything so long as someone opens up mail attachments from senders they don't know, or click on every "click me". 

 

You won't chew prechewed gum you found on the street, so why do not take the same care with everything else?

Oh I forgot, Anti Virus Software is always lagging behind. They have signatures and some heuristic engines that can find new viruses, but a really new one, the software won't safe you from, before it gets it's signature/engine update which then recognizes the new intruder.

Avira no never, even the paid for version. It gets you a crapload of false positives and lets real ones slip through, sometimes only finding them after several reboots.

Seriously, W10 is actually pretty secure and most antivirus software just runs in the background and chokes up your resources (looks at Norton...). As others have said, just use common sense and scan every now and then and you'll be fine

 

 

Edit: Just realised I said W10 is secure after the whole malware debacle

To be fair, MS did send a patch out in March addressing this recent malware.

 

As for antivirus, I'm running Windows Defender and Malwarebytes.

I'd go with Bitdefender if you are looking for a solid third party AV.

It's only resource heavy whilst doing a full scan, quick scans and the like are really light. 

I tend to see between 2-3% CPU usage from Bitdefender whilst at idle.
