Just updated the grub boot loader with sudo update-grub and then it did not show windows as a option.

Probably something to do with your BIOS I'd suspect...

Yes, if you load another linux distro it should fix grub for you, if not when you're in linux just get the grub manager and delete any entries you no longer need/want and then update grub... IIRC that's the procedure.
