This is the one I have. I think it was recommended by @imreloadin but I might be wrong. I took his word for it since I've had very bad experience with my previous optical drive and so far it hasn't failed me (as far as I know anyway).

It's a combo of both. And yes, burners can play movies as long as they have the support for it. It should say so in the specifications.

In that case, there's not much that I can recommend. (my apologies) I'd rather not risk it since I have had bad experiences with optical drives in the past and I do not want to recommend the wrong one/ones.

Maybe @imreloadin could help on that one in particular. They helped me quite a bit, but I can't promise the same for you as this situation is a bit different.

Should be. It works for Windows 8.1 and that's the OS that I use. I would be shocked if not. Maybe contacting LG would solve that particular question.

Keep in mind, even though you are able to buy a blu-ray player, you still require the software to actually play the blu-rays. Most blu-ray players I have seen do not include the software with the drive.

i do more research on this model, the other one i was looking at was like $120 so this is much better lol. and wouldn't the software just going to LG's site and downloading the correct drivers?

The drivers do not actually play the blu-rays unfortunately. The drivers only go to the extent of computer recognition for what the drive is and is able to do, but sadly it doesn't go further. You will require software such as Cyberlink PowerDVD.

That's the software I ended up purchasing.

Here you go mate, this one will both play and write any media like cd/dvd/bd https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M265N7A/ref=s9_acsd_zgift_hd_bw_bjFGNf_c_x_w?ie=UTF8&pd_rd_r=QXXJ9NKZV75DENYW8Q9T&pd_rd_w=D9Hyj&pd_rd_wg=1JEMK&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-6&pf_rd_r=QXXJ9NKZV75DENYW8Q9T&pf_rd_r=QXXJ9NKZV75DENYW8Q9T&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=5c35ec52-6f9b-4b6d-926c-10ad8299a6ee&pf_rd_p=5c35ec52-6f9b-4b6d-926c-10ad8299a6ee&pf_rd_i=668573011

only $67-ish. Also to play movies, if you're not worried about menus etc then you can just use KODI to play them. I ahve liked pioneer for a while now and have had the older model 207 for writing blu-rays. ripping etc for at least 5 years now and not had a single problem and have written hundreds of blu-rays during that time, not to mention all the cd/dvd ripping, burning and playing. Hope that's a good recommendation for you anyway :)

No worries, that's the one I would pick if I needed a new one, thankfully these drives are top notch and I have plenty of life left in the one I have right now, these are built to last.

I have the drive that Lampy is mentioning. I have it in a 5.25" external enclosure and am running Windows 10. As stated previously it is a burner/reader combo and as has also been stated pretty much every drive out there doesn't come with the software to play Blu-Rays so you'll have to get that from a third party. The player I use is Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra, you can use the Pro version and still have Blu-Ray playback however and it's cheaper than Ultra. I just got Ultra because it was on sale at the time lol.
