Why is My C: Drive Ejectable ?

i noticed recently that my work PC has a funky quirk, in the task tray where you eject drives safely (assuming you do that), when i click that icon it lists obvious things like my USB sticks, but it also lists my C: drive SSD as a removable and ejectable device. Obviously i tried it, which made it disappear from the list as if i had actually ejected it, but at that point i was clearly still running windows and able to access the files on the boot drive, so that definitely didn't actually happen :D

it shows up in the list again after every reboot.

 

Why does my PC think C: is ejectable ?

I could be wrong but it might be setup as a hotswappable port on the motherboard to allow for safe removal.

my first thought, good shout, checked it though and mobo doesnt support hotswap SATA.

yeah i've seen some funky stuff like this before so i was really just wondering how common this is lol. My first dell inspiron laptop had a drive letter assigned to the recovery partition out of the box for some reason, and being a kid i obviously deleted everything in it thinking i could get a few extra gigs of storage, which broke my PC :)

 

But then i learnt how to fix it, and here i am now 15 years later lol

Not totally sure then, maybe it's misrepresenting it as an external HDD that can be taken out.

i even checked what speccy thought of it, and it looked pretty normal, showed up in device manager as a fixed disk, partition editor seems happy with it. 

 

It's totally isolated to just the little "eject drive" box in the task tray.

The same thing happend on Linux Mint... "You may now safely remove your drive"

It was a partition on my hard drive...

in my line of work i come across a lot of these funny computer ghosts, but rarely on my own machines as im kinda anal about that sort of thing as i'm sure we all are. this one was just interesting enough to mention on LTT

I just RDP'd into my work pc to check something btw, rufus detects it's C drive as a removable drive ! i could DD it i think ? 

this doesn't seem right ?

 

do i do it ?

The computers have started to become self aware. Before too much longer instead of giving you the option to eject your C drive it will be ejecting you off the planet. Previous safety protocols are now obsolete and no more.  The rise of the machines has begun.

That's not unusual for MS, love how they kinda point finger at the motherboard manufacturers by saying it's all "decided" in the BIOS, yet the PC I had problem with was fine with Windows 7 but not with Windows 10 lol
