Hey guys,

So internet speeds of up to 1 gigabytes/second just rolled out in my area and I was wondering what would be the best Wifi solution to take advantage of these blisteringly fast speeds? I thought of building my own pfSense router and then using Ubiquiti access points, but I'm sure there are more solutions than that. It wouldn't be just over Ethernet. It would be 1 GBps Wifi and it would have to reach those speeds across a lot of devices. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Ethan

thats about the best you can do. If you want better than unfiy your spending a lot for cisco or broadcom(rukus) aps

Your not gonna get 1gig over wireles.

1. buy a good wireless router

2. build your own router with pfsense + buy access points

Ok. What would be some access points that could keep up with the Wifi speed as well as the router? I want zero bottlenecks

Is there existing cabling throughout the building?

Are you able to provide a floorplan?

What's your budget?

Uh so it's my dad's coffee shop and I don't have floorplans. I'm not looking for 1 GBps Ethernet though. I want the fastest Wifi possible. Period.

You're almost NEVER going to get the rated throughput on wireless because of a myriad of different factors and the amount of time and money you usually need to spend to overcome these factors is greatly outweighed by the ability to run some wires.

Just a few things off the top of my head:

For equipment, ideally you'd want 802.11AC Wave 2 capable access points but 802.11AC Wave 1 should suffice. You have to take into account interference from wireless access points nearby, other wireless sources and interferers such as concrete or thick wooden walls. The number of devices and their capabilities will also greatly determine the speed. Most phones cannot get gigabit throughput even if connected to the fastest wifi.

You also need 1Gbps capable wiring to actually use those speeds, a mesh network will generally hamstring the speeds.

no way you have 1GBps internet.

you have 1Gbps internet

note the little B

it means that it's gigabit, not gigabyte, and is 8 times slower.

Really!? Holy crap.

it really wouldn't matter that much though, because literally no devices can access that kind of bandwith, so your best bet is to have a router with multiple bands so 8 devices can all have 1Gbps

Nobody offers 1 gigabyte per second. Its either 1 Gigabit, 2 Gigabit (comcast is testing this now) or 10 Gigabit.

1GigaByte is 8 Gigabit

Ahh thanks for clarifying. So I guess it would be 8 Gigabit. But I'm positive it's speeds of 1 gigabyte per second.

Ok so then what equipment would I need to maximize Wifi speeds for devices such as phones, iPads/tablets, and laptops? Like I said, it's for my dad's coffee shop and he wanted me to do some research but I'm too lazy to do so and that's why I came on LTT forums lol

I almost garantee its 1 gigabit. Your gonna need some highend stuff to run 10gig which would be needed for a 8gig connection

If thats the case, then damn that bill has to be a heart attack every month. Comcast charges $199 a month plus $1000 installation for their 2 Gigabit service. I hate to see that internet bill.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I very much doubt you've got 8Gbit connected to the premise. If you do, you'll be spending up big to route that correctly.

Were you looking to charge customers for WiFi use?

No actually it's $40/month for life. They're in direct competition with Comcast
