Do anybody think Windows 10 S could also mean Windows 10 Starter edition. In my brain, Windows 7 was replaced by WIndows RT and then Windows 8.1 with bing and then now Windows 10S

Windows 10 S is not an edition you go out and buy. It comes with pre-build OEMs.

It is targeted at students, and schools with limited  IT infrastructure/resources.

 

The locked down nature of using only the store maximizes security. A student doesn't need to worry about viruses, malware and randsomware, infected USB flash drive and the such. Ideally, Chrome and Firefox would be available from the Store, and same for other poplar apps. Already you have: Facebook, Messenger, Twitter, Instagram, Spotify (they announced that they are coming to it), Whatsapp, Netflix, Kodi, Plex, Pandora, Skype (of course), Viber, VLC, Hulu, Fitbit, Slack, and many other have their app in the store. So, so far so good, but I think it will be a rough first year for students with the system, as I doubt Google has any interest, and Firefox moves like molasses. Opera (which now uses Chrome engine), might make it, as I see them trying to gain marketshare and always try to push things. Would be a good way to get people to switch, and increase their marketshare by a few percentage points.

 

Windows 10 S can be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro via the Store, as well. It is free until Dec 31st, and then it will be $50, which is a nice to see that you don't need to pay the full retail price of Windows 10.

 

Starter edition of Windows was not meant for school. It was meant as a free OS with the hope of having your background of Windows 7 logo, at the time, which you could not change, to act as an ad to others around you.

It's the Windows version of Chrome OS.

Your thinking of it backwards. Windows 8 RT was not designed to replace Win7 but to compete against Chrome OS.

 

Win10S: WIndows 10 School Edition; designed to be a locked and slimmed down version of Windows 10 to run on lower end machines for school use. It is for direct competition with Chrome Books. It can be upgraded to full WIndows 10.

 

Win8RT: Windows 8  and very limited and the only edition of Windows that can run on ARM based machines, though it did fail in general it was a lesson learned by Microsoft and they moved on with Win10S a more versatile OS than RT.
