Im buying a new graphics card but I cant decide between the 1070 or 1080, I can get the 1070 for £400 whilst the 1080 is only £90 more. The problem is, is it worth spending the extra £90. I currently use 1080p monitors which I know is overkill for the 1080. Which would you think is better, getting a 1070 with another 8gb of RAM or getting a 1080 for future proofing.

EDIT: MSI are doing cash back so I would technically get the 1080 for around £450 and the 1070 for £370

What refresh rate at 1080P? A 1060/RX 4/580 would be fine for 1080P 60Hz

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

The 1080 will ensure ultras on high refresh rates at 1080p and be more relevant when Volta hits the market... since the deal is so good I would personally go with it though you shouldn't lose your night of sleep should you get the 1070 instead... it really goes as in how far are you're willing to give you the luxury since even though the 1070 is "enough" the 1080 would allow you to crank the graphical settings all up for the "lulz"

Get the 1080. It'll give you 144fps at 1080p, and keep you covered all the way up to decent settings at 4k. Or if you keep it at 1080p, it'll last you a lot longer.

A 1070 would probably do that fine for ya then but if you want you can get a 1080 but it's more of a want thing than a need thing really.

I also currently have an i5 4690k which I do plan on buying a used 4790k, would that be a good idea or should I just go for a new chip like a Ryzen one.

For 144Hz, get a 7700K and overclock it to 5GHz. Ryzen can't do 144Hz

...?

In what scenario?

My 4770S has no trouble playing games at 144Hz and an R7 1600X has better single-threaded performance than it....

Depends on the game really, Ryzen can get 144FPS in games like Overwatch or CS:GO, but in many other games, it can't.

BTW, keep in mind that your CPU doesn't have CCXs.

As I expected a lot more from the 1080, I'm glad I didn't get a 1070. Strictly speaking from a single card perspective though.

id spend the extra that way I know I didn't leave anything on the table.
