I'm going to apologize in advance for being kinda boring. This pretty much fits the template of: here's my build, how do I improve it? I'd also appreciate help with the tags, or at least a link to the tag usage guidelines.

Everything will be done be done in $CAN.

You can find the working list here: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/Remedous/saved/zm6bvK

With this build I can go up to about $1600, this budget does not include peripherals. I don't want to spend extra money on RGB things. With this budget I'd rather stay within manufacturer specification and not overclock. I have a fairly small desk, so I'd like something that won't compete with my legs for room. With this I plan to play games at 1440p. I also want to use it for scientific computing. You might be rightfully thinking "what kind of scientific computing", to which I would say, I'm not quite sure. I plan to learn either cuda or opencl, do more work with machine learning, and when I finish high school I'm going to go to a university program focused on accurately, and efficiently simulating complex systems. If you're interested you can see it here: https://uwaterloo.ca/computational-mathematics/

Case:

Cooler Master N200 MicroATX Mini Tower Case

I went with a small case for the reasons described earlier, and because the larger cases tend to cost a bit more. This case has gotten a lot of praise on pcpartpicker, especially for the dust filtration and noise insulation.

GPU:

Zotac GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Mini Video Card

The 1070 looks like it does a pretty good job at 1440p gaming, and is just a good value card. I don't play anything really competitive, so I'm not looking for really high fps, so much as smoothness.

CPU:

AMD RYZEN 7 1700 3.0GHz 8-Core Processor

8 cores, 16 threads, only 65W, 3Ghz, AMD final stepped up their instructions per clock efficiency. I'm fairly certain I will be able to make use of those cores.

Everything put together this seems like a pretty good chip for $400. I think it's generally better to spend more on the gpu, but a $500 graphics card alongside a $400 cpu doesn't seem like that bad a ration.

RAM:

Team Dark 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory

I know I go over 8GB from time to time, and 12GB solutions are hard to come by. I could spend slightly less on 16GB of DDR4 ram, but at only $140 you can't save that much more, and not without going for something significantly slower.

Storage:

Crucial - MX300 525GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

I know pretty well how much data I'll need, and this is large enough that I have some wiggle room. DocSwag pointed me towards this drive.

Motherboard:

Asus - PRIME B350M-A Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard

It was one of the cheapest board that would fit with all the parts. It also has 4 ram slots, and won't bottleneck the ram.

PSU:

EVGA SuperNOVA G2 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

As per recommendation. Although I wasn't able to find it on http://www.jonnyguru.com/

Is there anything that'll just not work? Are there any little improvements you think I should make? You might have noticed I have just over $100 leftover in my budget, but there doesn't appear to be anywhere where I'll see significant gains by upgrading.

I'm probably not going to be able to use this too much leading up to exams, should I wait for vega reviews to start coming out?

iirc the stock wraith? RGB cooler is equivalent to a 212 evo

hes doing matx, so no DH-15.

BitWit actually tested it, and it's fairly quiet for a stock cooler. I agree, for it to be kept nice n quiet, even under load, a third party cooler would be best.

Otherwise, I would advise he get a different psu.

Really, only things I got to say (besides the PSU, though idk what you had before hand but what's there now is good) is to get a better mobo with 4 DIMM slots like this (yes I know the pro4 is cheaper but I've heard of bad experiences with it such as having a hard time OCing RAM and it also only has 3 phases for the CPU, even if you're not OCing it's still better to go for more phases) and to not get a founders 1070. Otherwise looks great.

It's not horrible, though it's more of an SSD that mainly makes sense if it's the absolute cheapest (still better than SSD Plus though :P.

Considering the Ultra II and MX300 are only a little more though I'd get one of those instead.

Agree with maybe considering an X370 mobo just for the upgraded VRM's for the CPU and SOC which sale heavily with price.

It's not horrible, though it's more of an SSD that mainly makes sense if it's the absolute cheapest (still better than SSD Plus though :P.

Considering the Ultra II and MX300 are only a little more though I'd get one of those instead.

But I strongly recommend this one if you can't swing X370 as Asus is quality in my experience. I am comfortable with my Gigabyte K7 but that's cuz I couldn't fit another $50 for the crosshair vi...

X370 would probably be ideal honestly, I've heard of them doing better when it comes to OCing RAM.

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

The Crosshair definitely has. My K7 and the RAM kit I bought from copy-pasting the part number from the QVL into amazon... My RAM is stuck at 2400 but it's a 3200 kit. Next BIOS update "should add 20+ RAM kits to the list". Per GIGABYTE admin on their website and their Twitter USA page in a DM. So patience for me.

yeah I'm still pretty salty about buying QVL approved RAM and it not working...

I think he's referring to it being a tad bit too expensive for this build.
