If you're looking for benchmarking applications themselves, you could try 3DMark or Unigine's Heaven. Various games may also have a benchmarking tool.

If you're looking a tool to capture frame rates over time during the game, you need something like FRAPS. Though Steam overlay has a feature that can tell you the FPS, it just won't save it anywhere for records.

depends on what you want to benchmark

for CPU id go with: ITX, Cinnebench, firestrike physics, superPi

and GPU: Firestrike, Unigine heaven and valley, vantage and any games you can get your hand on.

if you want to just messure framerates then fraps will get it done

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler

Ashes of the Benchmark as Linus calls it. You can try Cinebench.
