Pick something you'd enjoy doing.

 

Here's a suggestion : Make a voice recorder or some audio player (that can play wav or raw audio files as you don't have power to play mp3 files).

 

You'd need a microphone , maybe an audio chip to amplify the microphone levels and send them to your microcontroller using something easy to work with like i2c or spi and then your arduino would write the data to a SD card or some big EEPROM chip.

User could later play back the sound on a speaker by selecting the audio track using buttons and a 2 x 16 character display (you can make your own simple menu on such a text LCD display)

For voice, you can easily record as low as  8bit 11025 Hz mono, and that's basically 11 KB/s which an arduino can handle without problems... 

You could use something like AK4951EN which has everything you'd need (adc for microphone , dac to convert bytes from your arduino to analogue sound) , microphone and speaker amplifiers built in : https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/akm-semiconductor-inc/AK4951EN/974-1064-1-ND/5180415

The only tricky thing is that it's available only in 32QFN format but you can buy adapter boards to convert that to DIP , for example : https://www.adafruit.com/product/1163

 

Maybe add some serial connection to pc and make up some commands so that software on a computer could "upload" wav files to your project ( could be something as simple as having up to 256 "slots" for recordings in your memory chip, so the first 2 KB of the memory chip would be where each "slot" starts (4 bytes) and how long the audio track is. (another 4 bytes)

and the software on the computer side could say something like  add to track 9 the following 32 bytes  and then the software sends 32 bytes , your arduino acknewledges those 32 bytes and stores them to memory chip and updates the information about the audio track in the memory chip an... and so on.

Here's a suggestion : Make a voice recorder or some audio player (that can play wav or raw audio files as you don't have power to play mp3 files).

 

You'd need a microphone , maybe an audio chip to amplify the microphone levels and send them to your microcontroller using something easy to work with like i2c or spi and then your arduino would write the data to a SD card or some big EEPROM chip.

User could later play back the sound on a speaker by selecting the audio track using buttons and a 2 x 16 character display (you can make your own simple menu on such a text LCD display)

For voice, you can easily record as low as  8bit 11025 Hz mono, and that's basically 11 KB/s which an arduino can handle without problems... 

You could use something like AK4951EN which has everything you'd need (adc for microphone , dac to convert bytes from your arduino to analogue sound) , microphone and speaker amplifiers built in : https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/akm-semiconductor-inc/AK4951EN/974-1064-1-ND/5180415

The only tricky thing is that it's available only in 32QFN format but you can buy adapter boards to convert that to DIP , for example : https://www.adafruit.com/product/1163

 

Maybe add some serial connection to pc and make up some commands so that software on a computer could "upload" wav files to your project ( could be something as simple as having up to 256 "slots" for recordings in your memory chip, so the first 2 KB of the memory chip would be where each "slot" starts (4 bytes) and how long the audio track is. (another 4 bytes)

and the software on the computer side could say something like  add to track 9 the following 32 bytes  and then the software sends 32 bytes , your arduino acknewledges those 32 bytes and stores them to memory chip and updates the information about the audio track in the memory chip an... and so on.

 

 

 

Don't forget your anti-aliasing filter ;)
