I'm going to be building a Ryzen 5 1500X system in the  next couple of months and I want to delve into overclocking for the first time and I'm hoping to get it near max around 3.9/4.0GHz. I currently have the 212 evo but I won't be able to use it for my Ryzen build. I like quiet and I worry about pump noise from an AIO and besides, I like how some big air coolers look.

It needs to fit in my S340 case which has a max clearance of 161mm.

I quite like the sound and look (no pun intended) of the BeQuiet Dark Rock 3 will fit but the pro version wont. Or even the Dark Rock TF one?

Something from another brand? Cryorig H5 Universal? I know Noctua but they look so....ick.

Budget doesn't matter too much as I'm getting a new job and I'm treating myself :D

Bottom line I guess is, will any of these be better than the 212?

Why aren't you able to use your 212 Evo?

The H5 Universal and DR3 aren't that far apart in performance. the DR3 performs worse but is much quieter.

Doesn't support AM4. Nvm, it's supported.

Oh, my mistake.

I assumed that it wasn't supported since they never announced AM4 upgrade kit available for the Pure Rock. I didn't notice that they updated the specifications to include AM4.

All mentioned are at least bit better than 212. But you can get free upgrade kit for Ryzen if you still have invoice/receipt of 212 purchase (and for Ryzen too).

you can't beat the 212 evo price to performance ratio with my rig i've got heavy overclock (for air anyway) on a 6700k and it runs in a Aida 64 bench at 68 c solid for over 24 hours.

Actually there are better price/performance coolers, and rest of your reply doesn't tell anything if you don't give more numbers.

If you got it from online retailer, you probably have receipt in your email or their site. Just a thought.

Bought from a shop. I'm not worried, I kinda wanted something better anyway.

Despite the BeQuiet having a higher TDP rating?

How the TDP rating is determined varies and it isn't a consistent representation of performance between different coolers--don't read too much into it.

Any reason you're looking into these coolers in particular?

Idk, I don't look at TDP when shopping for coolers. Isn't that something manufacturer recommends? And not something to actually say anything about performance. Look at some review charts to see for yourself. Reviews are made with same setup and OC settings so they give much better view of performance.

Why don't you go with Ryzen 1400 if you will be overclocking it? It can get the same OC as 1500X.

Save some money on CPU, buy Dark Rock 3, and you don't need to worry about temps or noise.

Was searching through Amazon and saw they had good reviews.

So the H5 universal, as it's cheaper and allegedly better by a degree or two, should be the way to go? What is it like in cooling and noise vs the 212?

It cools significatnly better and is a bit quieter.

If you're looking for a very quiet cooler, there are better options though.

Where are you shopping/located? Budget?

I'm in the UK and am looking at Amazon or any reputable retailer really. Budget is £40/65ish give or take. The 1500X comes with a decent stock cooler anyway so I have more time to save for one suitable for overclocking. As for AIOs, I'm worried about pump noise. The case is NZXT S340 which supports a maximum cooler height of 161mm, if that makes a difference to your suggestion.

P.s - It doesn't have to be the best of the best, just something better than the 212.

**EDIT** looking at your chart, it seems the H5 and DR3 are both equal to one another in terms of temps and both, as you said, much better than the 212 in temps, therefore, getting the H5 for cheaper than the DR3 would be my best overall bet? Aren'y the H5 and DR3 both very quiet?

The DR3 is very quiet but the H5 Universal isn't nearly as quiet. They perform similarly in some cases but results vary with the H5 pulling ahead a bit more often. This is probably due to the better mounting hardware allowing for a more consistent mount.

The Kotetsu is a much cheaper option that's close to the DR3 in performance and almost as quiet: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/7998TW/scythe-cpu-cooler-scktt1000
