Will a 8 pin Cpu connect work with a 4 pin mobo

If the 8pin splits into 2 4 pin, it should be fine.

Maybe he's looking at an 8 pin GPU connector.

In which case he might fry his PC if he plugs it in.

If you're holding the CPU connector, there should be a division at the 3/4 and 5/6 pins. If there is just take half of the CPU connector and plug it in. 

 

If the connector is divided at the 5/6 and 7/8 (6+2 pin), you should find the other cable as you'll like kill the motherboard as @Enderman stated.
