Hello! I've been a longtime laptop user for gaming (TF2, CSGO etc). Laptop just recently breathed its last breath so I'm looking to build a desktop. My budget is hovering around $2000 USD but am absolutely flexible. I'm looking to use it for hardcore gaming (FPS's, triple A titles, some VR) at 1080/1440p on a 165hz monitor as welll as some light streaming. Although, overall game and PC performance will be prioritized over streaming capabilities. Just was curious if anyone had some suggestions for the build I currently have going. Thanks in advance!

(Looking to build this summer. And yes, I realize Vega is coming out, so I'm going to check that out when it drops.)

edit: I'm looking to OC, and I'm too stubborn to give up my 144/165hz monitor

NOOOOO!!!  That i5 is a FKN POTATO for streaming.  This build will perform the same or significantly better at pretty much everything you throw at it.  You could even upgrade to an RGB version of the K65 and I would personally suggest getting windows for $30 off Kingwin.

I'd go for the build quoted except with a Seasonic S12-II 620W PSU. The PSU listed is sufficient enough but I personally prefer more headroom for overclocking, new GPU, new CPU or really anything in the future.

I would recommend getting the 7700K if you can it will help out in streaming, though I wouldn't get the R7 1700 since it isn't as good if a gaming CPU and since you are light streaming the 7700K will suffice.

Edit: Since you would be getting a 1080/1080ti, even without streaming a i7 is recommended at 165Hz.

I'm definitely leaning towards this build. However, I would really prefer to OC, so I'm willing to increase budget for a 1700x and an OC'able MOBO

You don't need a 1700X or special mobo to OC RYZEN.  All you need is a decent cooler, B350 mobo and R7 1700

Why?  That build won't even use 450W at its peak.

You do need specific chipsets to overclock.  You can't just get any motherboard.

Also if you are gonna OC, don't use the stock cooler. You can if you want, but I wouldn't risk it. AMD aren't the best at CPU coolers, remember that.

AMD Totally given Intel a slap on their faces by actually for the first time shipping processors with actually good coolers.

Current gen wraiths are pretty good, if you get good silicon you can push to 3.9Ghz at reasonable temps.  Though I do suggest an aftermarket cooler if OP can afford it.  Added an H7 for $35

Because with a setup like that you'll likely want to upgrade some parts and it's nice to have extra headroom for that, and also OC'ing too.

Why would you want to upgrade parts on a build like that?  That's top of the line shit, there's nowhere to upgrade (and remain practical).

He already has 100W headroom.

Just to clarify, I'm absolutely willing to go over budget to accommodate for cooling and anything. Also, I know someone mentioned an i7 for 165hz. Just curious if that's the way to go for the refresh rate or if the 1700 would do the job

Personally, I think a 1700 is a better choice in the long run.  A higher end i7 will preform better now, but games aren't optimized for Ryzen yet.  I think we'll see a big improvement once they're designed to use more than 8 threads.

Unlocked i7s are better than the R7 series for high Hz gaming but R7 beats i7 by a MILE for streaming.  Depending on what games you play I actually doubt either will ever hit a constant 165Hz at 1440p, even with a 1080 ti.  Unless its overwatch or CSGO lol.

Yeah makes total sense. And I'm not too worried since an 1080ti is gonna pump out stupid good frames on anything you throw at it.

also: I'm open to different cases, the one I had was a placeholder basically.

Totally my fault didn't clarify. All the FPS's I plan on running will be 1080p and most likely not max settings. All the triple a stuff will be 1440p with refresh rate not an enormous ordeal to me
