There's no point. You have two ears and two drivers next to those ears. 5.1 or 7.1 surround systems on the other hand...

An example is the new HRTF mode in CSGO. It allows you to almost pinpoint the direction of a sound blindfolded, even quite accurately if you are willing to train some.

 

As for fancy true 5.1 or 7.1 surround headsets, it shouldn't matter. You have two ears, and that doesn't change even when you put on a 7.1 headset.

The thing with virtual surround sound is that it doesn't work the same for every person. I personally despise virtual surround sound, I think it fucks up the audio too much and doesn't help me pinpoint anything easier than I can with my K612's.

The HRTF in csgo is actually pretty decent, unlike third party stuff which has to kind of guess and piss about with the audio, its direct from csgo.

I cant be asked explaining how t he HRTF works, so if your interested go search wave field synthesis.
If your interested in how VR/360 videos on facebook and youtube does there surround audio search ambisonics.

I have tried the HRTF, it came out a little while before I quite playing competitive, not really a fan. I still prefer normal stereo with a pair of headphones with a big soundstage.
