Samsung s7 camera sucks. Why bother letting us zoom in when the picture looks like something from a ps1 game?

The apple iOS allows cameras to zoom in when it physically cannot.  It zooms in pretty darn well.  Iphone zooming generally worked well in past phones I used to own, so i dont think its a new thing.  Although, the iPhone 7 does have a 2nd zooming camera at 2x.

Why can't my s7 edge do This(zoom like the previous single rear cameras of an iphone)?  Are there any apps that allow me to take pictures zoomed in without looking like Minecraft?

Links explains the 2nd camera of iphone 7

Pictures attached shows that zoom becomes useless after 2x due to so much data being lost. It goes fron 3.9mb to 2.5mb to 1.9mb at 1x, 3ishx, 8x respectively

Well of course it looks bad, your using digital zoom. You would get the same results cropping the picture until only 1/8th was left (hence the reduced file size).

Well, a couple of things:

  1. The iPhone 7 Plus has a 2nd telephoto lens, which is able to do "real" zoom, not digital.
  2. Apple's camera software does a pretty good job interpreting the camera.
  3. Apple take the camera really seriously. They have a team of over 800 people working on the camera alone.

It's digital zoom, it's the same as cutting off parts of the image - you're going to lose quality. You should never use optical zoom, if you want to crop the image it's better to do it later with software.

And it is the exact same for every iphone until 7, if it looked crisper it's probably because of the smaller screen. This image seems to have been captured in a low light environment too, which will hinder the camera's performance.

If you want to take good pictures at various levels of zoom, buy a dedicated camera. There are some good (even point-and-shoot) cameras that won't break your bank and will fit in your pocket while outperforming any mobile camera.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

its digital zoom not optical zoom, iphone just has a second camera that has a 2x magnification going on thus being optical zoom without loosing sensitivity. you're probably seeing that even worse since the ppi on apple phones is pretty darn low compared to the samsung phones.

samsung s7 has a: ~577 ppi screen ( 5.1 inches 1440 x 2560 pixels)

iphone 6 6s 7 has a: ~326 ppi screen (4.7 inches 750 x 1334 pixels)
iphone 6+ 6s+ 7+  has a: ~401 ppi screen (5.5 inches 1080 x 1920 pixels)

Note the 3rd sample image provided has motion blur. If it wasn't there, it would help a lot. A lot of photography uses can be helped by throwing more light on the subject.

Because the iPhone has two different sensors with different focal lengths. Digital zoom is literally just cropping the image. Try just zooming in on a picture with the iPhone after you take it and it should look about the same as the s7 when they both have around the same digital zoom.
