Speaker wire to RCA?

JoeCoke

I don't know if I'm asking this right, but I'm slapping together an audio setup from some stuff I have laying around. Everything's working, except one thing, I can't hook my subwoofer to the receiver. The receiver has a single RCA port and the speaker uses regular speaker wire. Will this work?

Yes if the speakers you are using are use quick connection and the AMP uses RCA adapters you can use an adapter like that, most AMPs have quick connections though with quick connectors.

no it will not work. You would need a subwoofer amp

Do I even need the surround sound receiver dohicky? What's the best way to get speakers (that use speaker wire) to my TV? I'm obviously not an audiophile, but anything is better than shit TV speakers.

What is the model of subwoofer? If it only has high-level (speaker) inputs, you're going to need an amplifier and would probably be better off not bothering with it.

Speakers (that use speaker wire) should be able to connect directly to the receiver. Subwoofers need a separate amp, or its built into subwoofer.

So if I get a amp I could connect the subwoofer to this receiver and be good to go? Could you recommend me something cheap? Like I said, I'm not an audiophile so it doesn't have to be super high end equipment.

Sharp CP-SW4900. It says it's 80 watts. It's from the same set as the speakers I'm using, I can't find the original receiver that went to this set (probably don't have it anymore), so I'm trying to make do with what I have now.

BTW, thanks for helping a noob out everyone. :)

Sounds like you would probably need a separate amp for it. A SMSL SA-60 would probably do the trick.

Ah geez, 70$? Ahhhhhhhhhhh, I don't care enough to justify that cost. I'm better off just digging through the storage room and trying to see if I have the old receiver. Even without the SW, these two speakers already sound a million times better than the built in TV audio.

Thank you though, you saved me from buying a lot of useless adapters that wouldn't have worked. :)
