you cant 'transfer' your OS, you can only reinstall to the HDD/SSD

when you format, its essentially marking everything as 'empty, write data here if you need'

you cant chose what you dont want to mark empty when you format, so you backup everything as it wipes everything

you can use your current windows key, just login to your microsoft account after it finished installing and it should reactivate,

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

ooh so that is easier.. after formatting disconnect the hdd then put the windows cd ? no backup needed?

You could also use something like acronis or paragon to clone your hdd to your ssd.

can you tell me the steps you did?

For formatting and install?

backup all files that you want to a hard drive or usb

download an ISO of your choice of Windows (64 bit though)

grab a blank USB (all data will be destroyed) and download Rufus.

Open Rufus, select your blank USB, drag the ISO onto Rufus and then click start and wait.

After its finished, check that you have all your data backed up and say goodbye.

Restary your PC and mash del, find boot options and boot from USB

windows install will start

when it gets to partitioning, format (deletes all data) your hard drive. Install windows onto your SSD.

install windows onto ssd

reboot

put stuff back onto hdd

or you can just not format hdd but you'll have windows files on it (and for this method, unplug your hard drive until windows is fully installed)

There's a windows install screen that allows you to partition and format drives. Click on your hard drive and format it.
