[Creative name]

ok so this may have been discussed before and im sorry if i am asking this for the 100th time, but i can't find it so im going to ask any way

why are there so many titans with basically the same name

GTX TITAN X

Nvidia TITAN X

Pascal TITAN X

Nvidia TITAN Xp

Nvidia TITAN XP

so my question is is the GTX titan X from the 10xx series? because i think it is not

is the pascal TITAN X and the TITAN Xp the same thing?

and what are the EVGA versions? are they better?

and why 2 Nvidia TITAN X?

and where do i get what the people at nvidia who name these things are smoking?

Because some companies just have no idea how a goog naming scheme works and NVidia ran out of cool letters

As for order:

• Original Titan (Kepler)
• Titan Black (still Kepler)
• Titan Z (2 Titan Blacks on one PCB like the 390X2 or Fury X2)
• Titan X (Maxwell 1.0)
• Titan XP (Service pack 1 Maxwell 2.0 with 3584 Cuda Cores iirc)
• Titan XP (Service pack 2 Maxwell 2.0 with 3840 Cuda cores)

That is the right order I think.

There is Titan X Maxwell, Titan X Pascal, Titan Xp Pascal... they are all different.

because Nvidia are stupid, they released the pascal titan X at $1200 to then have a 1080ti perform better than it for less money, and then released the titan Xp which is better than a 1080ti for the same price as a pascal titan was new! The only reason the titan Xp exists is because the 1080ti is better than the pascal titan X and that's it.

1. you need to check what architecture it is based on to know for sure which titan it actually is

2. no, titan xp is the new revision of titan x (pascal)

3. they are all founders editions so it is the same but evga has good RMA policy

4. you answered it in your fifth question

The 700 series is just called Titan and Titan Black. No X.

Titan Black was released before the Titan Z. Titan Z is essentially two Titan Black chips on one PCB, not the original Titan. 

 

Titan was released in Feb 2013. Titan Black in Feb 2014 and Titan Z in March 2014.

the original titan X is Maxwell (900 series) based, and is the same performance of the GTX 1070

 

the second titan X is Pascal (10 series) based, and is the same performance as the 1080Ti (more or less) to differentiate this one from the old one, reviewers called this one Titan XP

 

the third titan X is legitimately named Titan Xp, not a nickname, and it is currently the top dawg.

yeah, kinda. just the titan x and 1080 are pretty much the same. it depends on what you are planning on doing with it

I don't believe this is the case.  I think GER_T4IGA's post was correct.  There was, very briefly, a plain ol' "Titan" in the 700-series.  I had 2 of them.  Then the Titan Z appeared.  Then the Black.

The Titan Black was launched on February 18, 2014. The Titan Z was launched March 25, 2014.

 

Anandtech reports the Titan Z didn't launch until May, where the Titan Black had been out for 3 months already

Thanks, I guess my old man memory isn't as sharp as it used to be.  I somehow had the Titan Z as a combo of the two original 700-series Titan GPUs, not the Black.

I remember the Titan Z coming out after I bought my Titan Blacks. Definitely remember Titan Blacks being the second Titan card as they released only a while after I bought my 780Tis. I thought the Titan Z was much later than it was though.

Maybe this is just me, but I think it gets easier to understand if you know how the GPU chips themselves differ. These "Titan" names are just consumer-facing terms that are kinda obscuring the differences.

 

The original Pascal Titan X was based on the GP102 chip, with 3584 out of its total 3840 cores enabled.

The GTX 1080 Ti is also GP102 also with 3584 cores enabled, and therefore through better clock speeds can be as fast or faster than the Titan X.

The Titan Xp is GP102 with all 3840 cores enabled, likely to ensure that the $1200 card actually performs measurably better than the $699 card.

Nvidia is not helping us out with the naming. Especially since the community has been calling the Pascal Titan X "Titan XP" since it released to differentiate it from the Maxwell Titan X.

Plz don't call them Maxwell 2.0. Technically that's something else, since 750 and 750 ti were Maxwell 1 and 900 series were Maxwell 2, so at the very least call em Maxwell 3.

Not entirely accurate, as the Titan X Pascal has a wider memory bus and more rops than the 1080 ti as well as 1GB more memory. 

 

And you can't really directly compare the Maxwell card to a Pascal one. Especially when one has 50% more memory. Titan X Maxwell~980 ti with double the vram would be a better approximation, imo.

Ok here we go...

 

1. GTX Titan, based on Kepler. Basically a cut down 780ti with double the vram, and with fully enabled double precision. Approximately equal in performance to a 970.

2. GTX Titan Black, based on the same GK110 GPU as the GTX Titan, except all the cores were enabled. Essentially a literal 780ti with double the vram and with fully enabled FP64. Also about equal to a 970.

3. GTX Titan Z, a dual Titan Black GPU. You can figure out what it performed like.

4. GTX Titan X, based on the Maxwell architecture. This was a fully enabled GM200 GPU with 12gb vram. Literally a 980 ti with all the cores enabled and double the vram. Approximately equal to a 980 ti or 1070 in performance.

5. Nvidia Titan X, based on the Pascal architecture. This is a GP102 based GPU with some of the CUDA cores disabled. Has 12gb vram. Literally a 1080 ti with 1GB more vram, more ROPs, a larger (albeit slower) memory bus as well as slightly lower clocks. Approximately a 1080 ti in performance.

6. Nvidia Titan Xp, based on Pascal. This is a fully enabled GP102 GPU, so essentially an Nvidia Titan X with more CUDA cores, more ROPs, as well as faster memory. About 5-10% faster than a 1080 ti.

 

And dats all of them.
