Hi,

My PSU fan is the loudest thing in the case on my Dell Vostro 220. I have a EVGA 500 watt PSU. Changing to a Noctua fan would quiet it down.

As a side note:

It has a Intel Core Duo E8500, HD 6870 GPU, 4 gigs DDR2 PC 6400 memory. Works great for emulation. Also the GPU has a 92mm case fan cut  out of frame(one of many that I had laying around). took care of card noise. Better the XFX fan the they provided. Card deshrouded. Completely improper. Cools better. Also Noctua on card would be better.

Yes voiding warrenty on PSU. GPU prevoided 3 years ago. Still not broken like OE fan on GPU that rattled so I said screw it and modded the card. Can't use PCI slot under it, Who cares. Still have PCIE X1 above it.

PSU has it's original fan. Assume that it is 120 mm updraft to exhaust out of the rear of psu.

Getting the GPU quieter involves destroying a Noctua 80 or 92 mm fan. So I can mount it to the heat sink of the GPU.

3 pin Noctua Will more than likely work in psu.

See what happens.

PSU fans don't use 3 and 4-pin connections like PCs do so that won't work. You'll need to solder the connection on.

Here's a video an old forum-goer made awhile back about putting a Noctua fan in his CX430.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

I had the same issue as with the video. noctua wouldn't spin up till under load. As they don't run till 40%. Once it did it would stay there or around 50% which is 1000rpm for mine. Every startup after it would just sit at 1k or higher if under load. I added a cable to the 4th pin and put it on the mobo for monitoring.

Went back and replaced it with a 140mm fan that came with my case. Back to being very quite.

I hope that you know that youhave to be extreamly careful when you open up a PSU. It can kill you. And since this PSU isn't the highest quality one, I would think about getting a new one.
