I didn't plan on upgrading my cpu to others of the same socket. I was going to wait for the g4560 to become obsolete and then get a new platform all together. I'm only considering my friend's offer because I know that the i5 is stronger than what I have and I get the benefit of using 12gbs of ram

If you weren't interested in upgrade ur 4560 then do it u won't interested on upgrading the i5. And if u do u could get an old i7 down the road a bit cheaper than than a new one. And still getting more performance than the pentium

My friend is offering to sell me his i5 4590 for $100 with a 1150 motherboard if I give him my current 1151 motherboard as he plans to be upgrading to an i7 6700k. I currently have a pentium g4560 and I know upgrading to the i5 4590 would yield better performance, but is it worth giving up my newer platform for an older platform? Also I would be able to use 12gbs of ram that I have from an old build if I take him up on his offer instead of just the 8gbs of ram on the current one I'm using. So is it worth it?

Yes, yes it is. How mush ram slots does the board have?

Sorry I'm relatively new so I didn't know about the text appearing like that for night theme users

The board that I'm getting with the i5 has 4 slots, I will be using 3 of those 4 slots for a total of 12gbs of ram

I dont think it is a good offer since the haswell series of cpu's came out in 2013 and does not have a upgrade path to later generation cpu's,the only upgrade path with it is to a i7 or i5 in the haswell series, while the socket 1151 mobo's can still take high end, latest cpu's from intel, and still you have to pay money for the combo and in that around that much price

 you can get a i5 6400 used

for that platform (if you're on z170)

I guess you have to consider that, then:)...

Depends on whether you want to upgrade your G4560 to something newer but with the same socket in the future.

But if you won't upgrade your CPU to others using the same socket, then go for your friend's board and CPU. You can use it till it gets outdated and get a new board and CPU then.

CPU: i7-2600K 4751MHz 1.44V (software) --> 1.47V at the back of the socket Motherboard: Asrock Z77 Extreme4 (BCLK: 103.3MHz) CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 RAM: Adata XPG 2x8GB DDR3 (XMP: 2133MHz 10-11-11-30 CR2, custom: 2203MHz 10-11-10-26 CR1 tRFC:230 tREFI:14000) GPU: Asus GTX 1070 Dual (Super Jetstream vbios, +70(2025-2088MHz)/+400(8.8Gbps)) SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB (main boot drive), Transcend SSD370 128GB PSU: Seasonic X-660 80+ Gold Case: Antec P110 Silent, 5 intakes 1 exhaust Monitor: AOC G2460PF 1080p 144Hz (150Hz max w/ DP, 121Hz max w/ HDMI) TN panel Keyboard: Logitech G610 Orion (Cherry MX Blue) with SteelSeries Apex M260 keycaps Mouse: BenQ Zowie FK1

your actual cpu equals to i5-7400 and depending on what are you going to use for. If you have to upgrade, you could go for the i7-4770 or i7-4790 which are pretty strong even if we are on 2017

Remember to quote me (or someone else), otherwise we won't going to recieve your answers...

no, not worth it because its not worth that much. it will preform better, sure, but its not worth $100 + your CPU and motherboard.  if you can make him go down to maybe $50 then i could see it being a decent deal though

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)
