I'm running a 4 core 6700k right now on my gaming rig. I also like to have many tabs open in google, I use discord, and even other applications running too. Will a 4 core cpu with these backgrounds apps running lower gaming performance when playing a game compared to a 6 core? I am by no means switching as it is expensive and essentially useless for gaming performance. But i am curious

not really

unless you're watching youtube at 4k 60fps while gaming at 1080p 144+ fps, while also unzipping something it'll only drop your fps by maybe 1-2.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

alright thanks. is this because are mostly gpu reliant?

yes, but some games like gta v are cpu heavy and you might see better fps going from a 4 core to a 6 core, but its negligible if you have a good cpu/gpu combo (so basically anything better than ivy bridge you're good)

You shouldn't have any issue doing those things with a quad-core like the 6700K. What you're describing isn't very demanding on the CPU.

Probably not. If you really wanted you could test it by checking fps between having hpthem or not but most likely the difference is 1%, MAX.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Because a 6700k is 4 cores but 8 threads and you really have to be pushing the chip hard for it to effect regular performance. Now if you were encoding or live streaming will still playing at 144mhz, on maxed out settings at 2k or something then you will see if effect performance. But honestly right now if your on the Intel 4000, 6000 or 7000 mid/high end chips, there is no point upgrading for gaming. Upgrade only if you are doing professional video editing or live streaming and really need those extra cores

Not really. As others have said, unless you're compressing files, encoding videos, in a Skype/video chat call, running Rocket League, GTA V, and WoW all at the same time, AND have 20 tabs open in Chrome, you won't see much improvement upgrading to a 6-core / 12-thread CPU. This is because software developers still haven't figured out how to utilize more than 2 cores at any given time for most applications, and it's 2017 already. :(

Even Adobe's Media Encoder and Handbrake only utilize an average of 85% of my 4-core / 8-thread i7-4790K during video rendering or 1080p MKV encodes, and that's using Software-based H.264 encoding, which has been around since the early 2000's. This means I can be rendering or encoding a video and STILL have 20 Chrome tabs open whilst playing a game with friends, voice chatting over Discord. You'd be better off making sure you've got 12 - 16GB of RAM in your system before upgrading to a 6-core CPU.

The question is less 4 cores vs 6 cores and more 8 threads vs 12 threads. Some CPUs like i5s have 4 cores and no hyperthreading, so only 4 threads. Those are definitely showing signs of being dated.  Right now it doesn't seem like beyond 8 threads are being utilized by many games. If i were to buy a new CPU today, I would probably get a 16 thread R7 1700, because I think we're going to continue to see the number of threads growing being the biggest cause of CPUs becoming dated. But if you have an i7 that is a  2600k or newer, I think with the current thread optimizations you can't justify switching to a higher threaded CPU.

If you want some numbers, I currently have 2 games running, YouTube, 2 other tabs on chrome and word open among other things, and Bar the game I'm actually playing, the highest CPU usage per background is 1%. This is on a locked I5 too.

More cores = more fun.

But actually, you'll be more likely to stress your RAM than you CPU with that kind of usage. The background stuff isn't really doing much, but it all takes up RAM.
