i like how you subvendor went from XFX to Asus LOL

Yeah it was the only 290X bios available to download at the time. I could go back to XFX, but still doing testing.

Bought my XFX 290 today. Since it takes a few days to arrive, I am preparing the surgical procedure to make it into an ASUS R9 290X, hopefully.

Can someone please explain to me how does it work on flashing the two bios?

I got the instructions, basically you boot with a flash drive, run a program and flash the card. Since it has two BIOS, and a little switch to choose from one another (UBER, QUIET), I'm supposing it flashes the one chosen at boot time.

So, I'll make a backup of my current bios and try to flash it. What do I need to do if it does not boot, and I want to flash the bios back?

Do I need to boot using the other bios, then flick the little switch and try to flash again?

What is the correct procedure to do, so I don't end up flashing the two BIOS with the ASUS one?

BTW - I have onboard graphics as well, I think I can always resort to using them.

Cheers!

If you haven't found the link yet to help you out. Here it is:

I hope AMD doesn't put a stop to this but they probably will. I'm guessing the non-reference designs won't be able to do this..

It's already happening with the initial cards running out and looks like new batches have the correct xx2020 laser etched code on the gpu shim. xxx2000 is the 290X model code for the gpu

Same answer as above. The gravy train looks like its about to run out soon already

  • 5 months later...

So you risked ruining your cards just to do this?

How would it ruin his cards? What u mean is, so you risked wasting 10 minutes of your time to gain 5-10% performance and upgrade your 400 dollar gpu into a 500 dollar gpu.

Yea.. He's a rebel...

He could have bricked his cards if the BIOS flash went awry...
