hello my name is chris or on this forum MS-DOS im am buliding a new budget rig i want to know would a lga 771 xeon in a lga 775 mobo bottleneck a gtx 980 ti  in any way

xeon is a e5420

Yes it will bottleneck very badly. I'd get a core i5 at least.

since the xeon is 4 cores 4 threads, it would probably bottleneck. additionally, there is a bigger gap for per-core performance between sandy lake and the stuff before that so its not going to perform well enough. I would honestly just go with a motherboard upgrade as well as CPU and GPU

Won't fit, its FCLGA1366, not LGA 775. Unless you are buying a new board, if so it will a better but why not get a used i7 3770K/I7 4790K since they would have better clocks and IPC.

Buy a second gen 1155 board and put a 3770 or a 2600 CPU in it and you're good to go.

no this is on another mobo i have 2 one with that i7 and im getting a lga 775 mobo
