If you can create a Homegroup (assuming you use windows) and share the main hard drive or attach an external drive and share it with the network it could serve as a NAS but I'm not sure how well it would handle being turned on 24/7. I don't know of a server designed Linux OS that isn't resource heavy. I know pfSense isn't a resource demanding OS but it's a Firewall/Router based OS not file storage. Their's CentOS but I'm not sure of it's system requirements and I don't know how to set it up as a file server.

well i got this pc for free i can always find a better one for free with atleast some better parts

centos will run on almost anything. it idles at around 100mb or ram and you can run a fileserver on about 256mb of ram just fine.

Yeah, I'm on the complete other end of the spectrum running FreeNAS with ZFS so tons of RAM is necessary for me.
