HP and Dell makes proper workstation laptops, with Quadro GPUs and up to three separate storage devices (with options for either triple SATA or M.2 SSDs).  I wouldn't waste my time or money on gaming laptops.

Yup, Dell has the precision line, which is the workstation counterpart of their XPS line, which is very good.

list exactly what software and how you'll be using it. cause for 3ds max, there is ZERO benefit in getting a quadro. however, some high accuracy demanding applications in the architecture demand do need quadros. same thing with solidworks. so please list exactly what you'll be using.

If the shipping is the same on both, get it through Alienware.  I never buy stuff through Best Buy so I don't know if the Alienware warranty is still applicable if you buy it through Best Buy.

What is the software? I understand the other parts, but the more important part is what software you're using. 3DS Max? Maya? Solidworks? Proprietary?

The DELL XPS 15 has a dGPU which is pretty good for 3D drafting actually. Also has great battery life and very portable.

Dont get a quadro, you might not need for undergraduate work. If you do, the only benefit is you'll actually get support from software manufacturers but a gamin card can do just fine or have almost the same performance.

thank you then alienware it is :-) or you could suggest a better option

The gt62vr imo is a much better (and cheaper) option since I still don't think dell has got their shit together as of yet, so it will be luck of the draw on how hot the laptop will run.
