processor Good Xeons?

I was recently told by a friend that he has a pair of Xeons that only cost him $150 dollars and he said that he OC'ed them to rival the preformance of i7 6950x. Does anyone know which Xeons hes talking about and where I can find them?

Maybe but you can't really overclock them.

 

He probably has a pair of X5650's or something similar., the funny thing is that my 7700K gives pretty similar performance due to the much higher IPC and clockspeed despite having fewer cores.

I think your friend is exaggerating quite a bit...

 

No $150 Xeon rivals the performance of the 6950X. While it's true that you can get good Xeons for cheap, they have a locked core frequency multiplier and can only be overclocked by completely upping the whole FSB so you're not going to get incredible overclocks.

But that would be Xeons not a Xeon and I'm assuming they're $150 each.

 

Don't get me wrong I love the Xeon's, they kept me on X58 for years after my 920 started crapping out. I just don't see any Xeon touching the 6950x at nearly 1/10 the price.

Buying used Xeons can offer double the performance of an i7 6950X at half the price!

Unless you use it for workstation use, just pick up an i5 or an i7 (The cheap ones, not those extreme processors)

A pair of 5680x CPUs would be about $150 and kick some ass. Mine is OC'd to 4.3ghz.
