New Custom PC

prav_1102

Hi Guys,

I am getting rid of my very old (9 years) computer. which runs on quad core 2 @ 2.4 Ghz processor with an intel DG33 FB motherboard with 4 GB (2 sticks) DDR2 ram. so here I am planning to build a new PC.

1. Budget & Location

I am from India and I am planning to buy the PC in US via Amazon. I can spend up to $700 USD. I can marginally increase my budget if required.

2. Aim

I mainly use my system for day to day activity like web browsing, listening to music, watching movies and on the professional front I would like build VM's and test the enterprise software's.

3. Monitors

I am planing to use only one full HD monitor. 6 months ago I replaced my old monitor with an AOC i2369VM in purchased in India. if it comes to upgrade I might upgrade my monitor to an 4K monitor if gets cheaper and affordable. also at times I might be connecting my PC to my 4k TV (not just yet, planning to buy later this year or next year).

4. Peripherals

I am not planning to buy any new peripherals. I am planning to run the PC on windows but not planning to buy it as I already have it.

5. Why are you upgrading?

well I have answered this question in the first few lines itself. please share your valuable feedback.

This should be a good starting point:

Ryzen Build:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QBjwFd

The other option would be to go for a xeon build which I'll work on putting together right now and I'll edit this post with that as well.

Xeon Build:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/H9cJ2R

You'll want a processor with a lot of threads/cores since you'll be doing VMs and other enterprise grade stuff, where more cores will definitely help.

If there is anything you can re-use such as hard drives from the old computer that would help. You might be able to get rid of the dedicated GPU for a cheaper one that just provides video output, if you don't plan on gaming at all.

Just edited my original post with a Xeon build as well.

Some points to note, if you're willing to look for a used OR a different X79 motherboard then you can definitely shave a good bit of money off the build. I just went with the one I did in the Xeon build because it was the cheapest one with an actual price on PCPP.

He is going to need lots of RAM, good CPU, and GPU won't be important.

Basic spec recommendations

I'd say 32 GB ddr4 (64GB is possible)

AMD Ryzen 1700X

AMD RX480 8GB (not very necessary but good value, maybe take this out and use integrated graphics, but get 64 BG ddr4 RAM instead).

Issues here:

1. 1700, 1700X and 1800X can perform the same with a simple OC.

2. X models have the annoying 20 deg offset.

3. 1700X and 480 takes him over budget.

4. None of the ryzen series have onboard graphics you will have to wait for the APUs for that.

Ok.  I didn't do that much research.  I just gave a few suggestions and general direction.

hey guys thank you very much for taking your time out to build a system for me, I really appreciate your time and effort. maybe i should have been more detailed when i mentioned VM with enterprise application. I don't necessarily run then day in and day out. but lets say a new version of an application is released or lets say I am learning new tools/technology then I'll build a new VM system, rest of the days its just going to be more of a personal computer. so I don't think I should go for xenon processor, considering the no of desktop application I will be using. so I prefer a i7 based system with little extra power so that i get a balanced output of both desktop/server like performance.

P.S no offense to AMD fan boys, but I prefer Intel of AMD coz of the extreme tropical condition coupled with power fluctuation every now and then especially in the summer.
