Depends what you want to do, and what Ryzen you're buying.

If you're thinking of a 6-core Ryzen, it's hands-down better than an i5

if you're thinking of a 4-core Ryzen, it's debatable. if you want to do heavy lifting with your PC, then get a ryzen 4-core. otherwise, for only gaming, get the i5.

***It's important to pair Ryzen with very fast RAM. if you get 2133 or 2400Mhz RAM, it will underperform. I'd recommend 3Ghz for max performance.

Well 2400Mhz RAM isn't bad. it will simply limit the Infinity fabric's speed, and cause Ryzen to be slightly slower for stuff like gaming.

I'd still absolutely recommend a R5 1600 over an i5 any day, so if you can afford a top-tier 6-core Ryzen, then get that.

There was apparently a YouTuber from Uruguay and he tested the r5 1400 to be faster that an i5 7400 for less money. Not that this is a definite result and other test won't tell us differently, but I would assume that amd will have the better offering concerning price/performance and the offer definitely a lot more threads for the money which might become more and more important.

I really don't understand why you buy a motherboard before tests are out for ryzen 5. I am very excited about this new architecture as well, but we really have to wait and see how ryzen 5 performs.  Will overclocking be better? Will the structure be that a 4 core will not depend on ram speed as much as 6 and 8 cores do and will (because of the infinity fabric)?

For heavy lifting, like benchmarks, video editing, etc. it's a no-brainer.

but for gaming only, the higher IPC and clockspeed of an i5 might push it over R5.

Oh OK got it.

For an RX 480, both an i5 and r5 will work totally fine with no bottleneck.

So just choose something easy for you. I'd recommend a R5 1600, because along with being pretty cheap, it's also crazy powerful.

plus the motherboard socket will have longer support and the option of putting in zen revisions cpus down the road. all that being said i would still look at benchmarks to see what type of performance they are getting before you buy.

I would lean towards Ryzen - for the sake of longevity and upgrade potential. 1151 is a socket that will be phased out after Coffee Lake. Coffee Lake itself is just another refresh of Skylake. So, there is not that much of upgrade potential for you if you go for KL i5. AM4 is a brand new platform. It has its downsides - the BIOS for most AM4 motherboards is rough around the edges, and DDR4 compatibility leaves a lot to be desired. But you will have better upgrade options in the long run vs 1151.

R5 1600 is really the sweet spot.  It's going to be interesting to see the benchmarks though.  I'm expecting it to be on par with the R7 chips in gaming and roughly 25% slower in multithreaded workloads due to the reduced core counts and for the pricepoint that's pretty awesome.
