Looking for new headphones

FineVisionz

Looking for some new headphones to use for gaming around $100.  I don't need a microphone.

Well, what are you looking for in terms of sound?

My off the cuff recommendations would be the Philips SPH9500, Sennheiser HD558 (both of which are a steal right now on Amazon) or the Audio-Technica ATH-AD700X.

All of them are great headphones, but all are different in terms of sound signature, width and imaging of the sounds stage and features in general.

I am looking for headphones that have a balanced sound when it comes to highs and lows.

My recommendation would be the Sennheiser HD558s then.

What would be a good option for music listening as well?  I listen to pretty much everything, from Rock, Rap and EDM.

Yup, the 558s sound awesome on rock, and with everything else. I love'em. I see that they're around $95 on amazon. You may as well give them a shot.

My only problem is that it won't work with the V Moda boom pro.

It would have been nice to know that was a criteria from the start.

If you really want to use the V Mode Boom Pro, I'll change my recommendation to the Philips SPH9500s. They sound somewhat similar to the HD558s, but the have a bit more focus on the treble.

you can get them to work with the boom pro quite easily. You just need to remove a little plastic ring that is located where the cable connects. You can go to YouTube and find walkthroughs.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Feel free to pm me if you have a question for me or quote me. If you want to hear what I have to say about something just tag me.

Then check out:

- Status Audio CB-1 (closed)

- Philips SHP 9500 (open)

No need to hack the Sennheiser 558. Compared to the Sennheiser 558, the Philips SHP 9500 has bit more treble and less bass. They're great for most genres of music but I sometimes want more bass on some tracks.

I think im leaning towards the SHP 9500 more than the 558 due to the fact that it has to be modded to work with the v moda mic and even if I get a standalone microphone I have to use a 1/4 in to 3.5mm adapter to use with my computer.

I have the SHP 9500s and really enjoy them. I have no issues with fatigue after multiple hour sessions but I do have one complaint. The headband will not hold its position at all. Simply taking them off makes them move all over the place.

I did do a slight mod I found here to improve the sound from stock. It softened out the highs which were a bit sharp for me out of the box.

Would I benefit at all with using the Astros mix amp with the SHP9500?  Or would I be better of useing them straight into my computer's 3.5 mm Jack?

Straight to the Motherboard. It works well that way.

Unfortunately the AKG K-182 are closed back headphones, which aren't ideal for gaming.  Thanks for the suggestion though!  I'll make sure to keep it in mind and do a little research on them!

I think I am going to go with the SHP9500 especially since its on sale for $54 right now on Newegg.  Will my computer's 3.5mm port be enough to power them to get the full potential out of them or should I consider some kind of amp/sound card for my computer or something to pair them with?
