gaming build

xzantian

i have been working on a build for quite a while now, with a lot of planning and consideration, as this will be my build for quite a while. I had a post a week or so back that quickly took a nose dive since the build i proposed was... terrible... and created in a fit of insanity. I now have a much more reasonable build.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GZkgNN

I live in the us, and would like to avoid naming a specific budget as the primary goal of this system is to game at 1440p and at least 60 fps on ultra with as little spending as possible, though reliability is important to me.

EDIT: i would also like to know if i have overlooked any incompatibilities.

Its a very solid build, is the 6700k already bought? If so you don't really need a Z270 although it will work fine, just wondering if you can shave a few $$$ by going with a Z170. Only other thing is maybe a Crucial MX300 275gb SSD, almost same performance, costs less and an extra 25gb

otherwise good build

Get an ASrock Z270 SLI/AC so you can have on board wifi on the motherboard. Other than that it's a solid build

That $250 i7, do you already have it?

Other comments: Samsung 850 EVO SSD is not worth its price, get a Sandisk Ultra II or SK Hynix SL308 for $80

Grab the Gigabyte wireless NIC, costs less and supports 802.11ac

There's a 3000MHz kit for $110 from corsair, save some buck there

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

Get a SK Hynix or Crucial MX300 and a Z170 motherboard with built-in WiFi (make sure it's a AC and dual-band). Z270 is unnecessary for 6700K

the i7 6700k is going to be bought new from a friend at work, as for the mother board, i heard that wifi built into the mobo is around the same price and less upgradable than a nic expansion card from another person at work.

the z170 boards dont seem to be as stable with high speed ram from my research, though that may just be me being crazy since this build is already well beyond my price range and im starting to become a perfectionist, that being said, i have not found a z170 board that saved me more than 10 bucks while still being msi or asus, and i would prefer one of those brands since asrock and gigabite seem to be less robust, and more prone to breaking under shock (the pc will not be abused, but im parnoid it will fall over and i have exactly 0 ability to replace this if it goes south, so reliability is a huge deal to me)

does anyone have any experiance with the gigabyte nic? i was wondering how well it would pick up signals through walls (i am aware that this is mostly a router issue, but some nics tend to be less sensitive than others) also, i know my questions are probably dumb, but i am out of my depth in terms of price and would like to put it together and have it run with no issues. i dont want anything to come broken or have bugs later down the road. also, the nic is a temporary solution, i will have the computer hardwired as soon as i move out, but that will not be for another few months

  1. No, onboard wifi is usually cheaper and most times of higher quality
  2. Again, not really true
  3. Again, not true, ASROCK and Gigabyte have similar quality and ASRock seems to even have better customer support than MSI. All mobos are made of similar if not identical PCB materials, and even if your case falls the chance of the motherboard breaking is the leastof your problems (HDD = fucked, GPU = fucked, CPU cooler = prob fucked, case = fucked, fans/mounts  = fucked)

the other mobos i found for the z170 chipset are all within 10-20 dollars of the mobo currently on the rig, and i dont mind the extra 20 dollars out of 1600 to put me at ease about my own crazyness. i know its probably a bad decision. i was also wondering if anyone had suggestions on the monitor, i found this one at this price at bestbuy

made a small mistake, fixed it

does adding an led to the ram dim in any way effect performance? it has the same ratings but is cheaper?

ram dosent affect performance. But at nearly 120 dollars you can get 32gb for 30 extra

i don't foresee myself using more than 8, i upgraded to the 16 gb kit because it was 30 extra in many cases for twice the ram and a major speed boost. i dont believe i will end up using the 16 gb kit to the max, so i dont think i will be making that upgrade but i will look into it

Before you go mouthing off on other people's computer builds, why don't you provide your suggested computer build?

Then, everyone in this thread can make comparisons.

It's obvious judging from this post of yours, you have no idea what you're talking about.

As mentioned bad ssd

Why a 6700k on a z270

A 1440p 144hz with a 480 are you cereal?

Not a good cooler too

He doesn't need 750w

Before you go mouthing off on other people's computer builds, why don't you provide your suggested computer build?

It's obvious judging from this post of yours, you have no idea what you're talking about.

I have made tons of PC builds on here. OP's build is great except for a few possible tweaks.

i don't think i will be moving over to radeon, I feel like the 1070 is a better price to performance card, and have a personal preferance towards that brand, i know that isnt the best reason to keep it, but i feel like the 1070 will be a better buy at my price point, and will perform well at 1440p. I know i wont get crazy frame rates, but with a decent g-sync monitor above 40 fps ill be happy. i want closer to 60 but i know that is a bit of a pipe dream for consistancy.

So what?

This thread isn't related to all of those "tons of computer builds" that you have claimed to have made. That's irrelevant.

This thread is only for the original poster's computer build and nothing else.

i've had a number of people on this thread suggest moving to a z170 board, is it really worth 10-20 dollars in savings and trying to learn a new mobo bios setup? i know brand preferance doesn't count for much, but i feel like there are a lot of people adamantly suggesting a z170.
