Still Relevant?

Ive been given an I5 4690 CPU (non K) from work which was IT surplus, - As far as i can see on intels ark its a Haswell quad core 3.7 ghz chip which is multiplier locked. Ive got a cheapo H81 board and 8 gigs of DDR3, just need a graphics card. I know its an old hat CPU now but thinking of an RX480 or something like that. Is this still a decent CPU, will a 480 be a decent pairing?

Using a 4690k (didn't OC but it boosts ok anyway) along with a 1070. No issues.

CPU R7 1700    Motherboard Asus Prime X370 Pro  RAM  24GB Corsair LPX 3000 (at 2933Mhz)    GPU EVGA GTX1070 SC  Case Phanteks Enthoo Pro M    

Storage 1 x 1TB m.2, 1x 500GB SSD, 1x 1TB HDD, 1x 8TB HDD  PSU Corsair RM1000  Cooling Thermalright Macho Rev B (tower)

Synology NAS 1 x 4TB 1 x 8TB

Yes it's a nice pair. I have a 480 paired with a haswell i5 4460. So far is great

Just did a minor test - the 4690k was at 100% during a GTA 5 short playthrough. BUT the 1070 in the city was nearly always at 75-90% load.

That at 3440x1440 and getting an average of around 60 fps. Not small settings, pretty darn good ones.

 

So don't worry if you get 100% load on the CPU - the games will run good.

I really don't care about it being a bottleneck :) In my work OCing won't bring much benefit - an R7 or current gen i7 will do that. In what concerns games - it satisfies me as it is.

Some time ago i relinquished the fruitless endevour of OCing. Let the boost do its' job.

Great combo man, thats what most gaming solutions should look like, I'm amazed by the amount of "Content Creators" Out there at the moment needing that i7/1800X for them Dota's :P

There's always one component holding  another back to some degree. I'd say he's fairly well balanced but leaning towards CPU bound

GTX 1050

16GB DDR3

Samsung evo SSD

a few HDD's
