Hobby motor, Electric Longboard

Hi guys,

Im looking to make my own electric longboard,

i already have the longboard i want to use and i was wondering if i could get some help with the electronics side of it,

i am planning on using a hobby engine and get all the bits and pieces like gears and chains from amazon or ebay.

put down your ideas or give me some suggestions,

will be updating with progress as i go,

wont be starting the build until the 3rd when i get paid, but will be doing math and research until then,

depends on how much you wanna spend on what you could do, e.g. if you just strap a battery up to the bottom of the board, connect t to a reasonably powerful motor (run it through a variable resistor for control the max speed of it as well) and then run a simple gearing mechanism to the rear wheels, using either a chain or a pulley (pulley means that you don't need to set up a tension mechanism, but it might not be as efficient).

Money wise i dont really have a budget and that sounds good, only issue is im a fairly big guy 205 pounds so will need a motor that can pull me and probably a heavy backpack and yeah i want speed control and possibly regenerative braking (if thats possible)

Don't use gas or nitro use electric instead.

and you can use a standard pistol grip remote to control it. I know someones who did something similar and they said they could easily hit 30-50mph which is stupid on a long board.

I recently finished my first longboard build so here's my 2¢:

1. Avoid circular trucks (such as paris) unless you're using hub motors or can TIG weld your motor mount to the truck. Find something with a "D" shape like caliber trucks. It will make your life so much easier when mounting the motor bracket.

2. Do not cheap out on electronics. I started with a 80A airplane esc. Totally failed. Moved up to a hobbyking 120A boat esc. I ride it to class most days and it works but there are some quirks such as this.

3.  Look into a VESC, it will make the board safer and add more functionality to it (regenerative braking, sensored motors, etc) while also making it more like a factory board (boosted board).

3. For a 205lb person you will not get anywhere with hills without 2 motors and a high voltage battery (>20V). My 120A ESC overheats going up a relatively small hill with a 130 lb rider and a 20V battery.

how big is that battery because it looks really bulky, i like the idea of 4 motors for that extra pull, and as for controls i am not fussed about a cable as long as it is long enough (im tall, 6ft3) but of course wireless is an option, im not super good with electronics, ive soldered once in my life.

another worry that i have is that im from good old england and everybody knows we have more potholes in our roads than you could believe, and all of them are uneven and gravely, i could get bigger wheels but dont know if that could counter it enough

The batteries aren't that big something like a 4-6s lipo is what most people seem to use. Factory made boards usually use Li-on or Li-fe 18650 batteries (im not sure about the cell count or pack organization). As for the 4 motors I think 2 is the sweet spot. You need a seperate ESC for each motor so 4 gets to be really expensive. Also 4 motors means less range than with 2. Go with a wireless remote. Its much safer and you won't break your board if you fall off. Bigger wheels won't really help I have 90mm wheels and a medium piece of gravel will stop the board. Maybe look into something like a mountain board with air filled tires if the potholes are going to be a big problem.
