Asus Max. IX Extreme + Radiator Help

I want to get the uber-sweet Asus Maximus IX Extreme motherboard to easily cool the CPU, VRMs, and M.2 SSD.

I do not want to overclock the EVGA 1080 Ti FTW3 that I want to put in it as it's a pain and I plan on updating the GPU every time the latest Ti is released - not fun to have to take apart the loop.

I want EK WB for all the liquid cooling parts.

Is a 480mm radiator with 4 fans overkill for cooling those components? Will it keep the temps lower than a 360mm radiator with 3 fans?

  • A 480mm radiator can cool over 500 watts. CPU + VRMs + M.2 SSD is something like ~100 watts.

Also got my eye on the EK-XRES 140 Revo D5 PWM (incl. sleeved pump).

Edit:

I was interested in the Asus IX Formula, but with the Extreme I can skip the water block for the CPU as it comes with one, I can use 2 fewer tubes and fittings, and the M.2 SSD can be cooled.

Lol :P

Well, what's the point in purchasing a 480mm radiator with 4 fans if I see no difference vs using a 360mm radiator with 3 fans? Perhaps just for the fact that it looks cooler?

A 480mm radiator can cool over 500 watts.

EDIT: I am a complete liquid cooling noob

I bet you'll end up cooling it anyway, after hearing the fan noise and seeing the temps.

A 480mm is overkill for just a cpu/mobo. But you'll never have to worry about it either. Really just comes down to how easily you can fit it in your case.

Well, tbf the loop will need to be cleaned and maintained every 8-10 months and assuming you get lazy and don't drain the loop until 12 months. Your still going to have to take the loop apart anyway so why not water-cool your GPU too so when you do upgrade to the latest and greatest gpu it would just be part of the maintenance procedure?

Didn't know I'd have to drain it at some point. I'm guessing not doing so will lead to biological growth.

Maybe I will water cool the GPU.
