Does my laptop support 1440p?

I have a Lenovo Yoga 13 (the original one from 2012) it has HDMI out, will it support 1440p 60Hz external display?

I wouldnt be sure about your laptop, i have an HP laptop from around 2013 it has a 720p display, when connecting to a 1080p TV the image looks weird, the upscale is good enough for use but it doesnt look right so if the native resloution of the laptop isnt 1440p dont try it unless it has a good upscaler, or you can set the resoluton on the native when you connect to your 1440p display. But if you dont mind a weird upscale (as i said its totally usable just weird looking) go for it.

I know, I wouldn't dream of gaming on it. My rig is out of action until my sentry arrives and we get some AM4 mITX boards though.:(

It works fine connecting to a 1080p TV. I know there are different standards for HDMI and I was wondering if these would present an issue to me and I can't find the answer online.

Then i say go for it but the picture will look WAY better on the native resolution, just saying. But if you feel more comfortable in a monitor then who am I to judge you.

I know I can get a picture to display. I was wondering if it is possible to get a 1440p picture to display. The native res of the laptop screen is 1600x900 but it can push 1920x1080 just fine over HDMI. I know 1440p is a different beast with different standards so the question is can I push 1440p at 60Hz from my HDMI port, I don't know what version of HDMI it is.

You can set the 1440p monitor to be a 2nd monitor and then set it to default monitor.

The version of HDMI doesn't matter, if you use an HDMI 2.0 cable and your display is 2.1 you just wont get the features that come with HDMI 2.0 thats all there is to HDMI versions.

Yes, i am ware of that, my point is still relevant as the image wont look as good when it is upscaled, same thing as going and watching 1080p video on a 720p monitor, the fact that it is default doesn't mean that the hardware was made for that resolution, therefore it could have SOME problems but for the most part work perfectly fine.

Thats just what i think, I could always be wrong.

It won't be upscaled if you set it to a separate monitor and make sure it is set to its native res.

My laptop which has a 1366x768 screen works fine with a 3840x2160 monitor and also fine on a 1600x900 screen...

So, with HDMI ports are they all the same and it's the cable that varies version to version?

No, HDMI 1.4 Supports 4K 30Hz, However HDMI 2.0 Supports 4K 60Hz

Right, so on the specs for my laptop it just says 'HDMI' how do I know whether this is the correct version of HDMI for 1440p60?

Maybe your laptop's HMDI port supports higher resolutions it COULD be the case that his HDMI port doesnt support higher resolutions. Its like connecting a Nintendo Switch to a 4k TV, it wont look as nice as the switch's HDMIm port can only output 1080p. The fact that your laptop can do it doesnt mean his laptop can but seeing your laptop's resolution is lower than his as i said already, It will work perfectly for the most part. and quoting myself "I could always be wrong"

Exactly incorrect. The port version matters on both ends, the cable doesn't. Different versions of HDMI support different resolutions and refresh rates (i.e. HDMI 1.4 or 2.0). The limiting factor on something like a Switch is the GPU power as well as the HDMI version.

There haven't. As I just said the cable doesn't matter (with the exception of some extremely old cables). Only the port has changed, both sides must be up to standard for higher res and refresh rates
