Paypal

Go to solution Solved by AshleyAshes,

1) Yes, it's safe.  Paypal isn't going to start draining consumer's bank accounts and then all the executives run away to Mexico.

2) In the event that PayPal did drain consumer's bank accounts and the executive staff increase their stock of novelty sombreros, your bank will replace the money.  All banks offer you certain protections against theft and identity theft though you could be waiting weeks for a resolution from your bank.  (This also applies in a much more realistic situation where your card gets copied by a retailer you swipe it through or if someone steals your real card.)

Hello people!

Ok so I finally created a bank account and got a debit card. I created a Paypal account because it's the only way to use my card online and i do most of my purchases online. My question is, is it safe to link my bank account to paypal or i should not do it?

It's the only way??? What websites are you using? No business would limit themselves to just one form of payment.

Amazon, Steam, Ubisoft Shop and all that kind of stuff. The bank I am with only provides cards that has the card number on them, so there is no expiration date nor security code so it's impossible to use it online unless i link my bank account to paypal.

I'm in Canada btw

Well at least here in the U.S. (I would assume Canada too) we have consumer protection laws, and houndreds of thousands of people use PayPal.

All I can provide. My gf has PayPal for the small times it's the only form of payment, so far she still has her money.

But is it linked to a bank account or she only have money on her paypal account?

I know that paypal is safe, but to link a bank account to it, I don't know.

It's safe. Not sure why you're worried to be honest. You're already attaching your debit card, which is essentially attaching your bank account. So you've already done it. It's just a duplicate step.

Paypal is safe. Also, why dont you just use your debit card? paypal is not the only way you can pay online, infact there are quite a few sites that dont do transactions through paypal like amazon.

You must only have a place holder debit card. The real card should be coming in the mail. I have never seen a debit card other than those placeholders without a exp and cvv number.

It's the final card... I destroyed the temporary one as it was asked.

RBC has Visa Debit. Ask for one of those cards. It's worlds easier than messing around with Paypal.

Not all debit cards are Visa Debit.

I already have my card. If it was possible to exchange it I would do it.

You call, and ask for a Visa Debit card. They're working for you, it's not the other way around, nor is it impossible.

The effort it took for me to get a TD Canada Trust bank card WITHOUT Visa Debit.  You can't do Interac Online and Visa Debit on the same card.  I had to quote TDs own FAQ to explain to staff why I wanted an alternate card.  Once after at bank, a teller took my card away, thinking it was an older TD card needing to be upgraded to Visa Debit and I was all 'No!  Stop!' Why would it matter? Visa is pretty universally accepted.

Actually it's not.  The Visa Debit function is a 'Virtual Visa' and as such doesn't work in physical transactions.  If you are at a restaurant that accepts visa and cash but not bank debit, the virtual visa function on your card is useless to help you pay.  It does work universally online however.  Since I have a real TD Visa card, the virtual visa function on my bank card gave me no additional utility.  However I do use Interac Online for payment at times but you can't have two online payment functions on one card as per rules set by Interac, so I needed a 'dumb' card without the visa function.

That's what I meant, seeing as that's what the whole thread was about...

What I meant was it's likely somewhere that takes Interac Online also takes Visa.

Oh that, yeah but sometimes I just like using direct from my bank account for a purchase like when I pay my phone bill at the end of the month.  No waiting for it to post to Visa.  That said, I don't often use Interac Online, but I have zero use for a Virtual Visa when I have a real Visa credit card.
