Windows 8 Store got 1.7 million daily downloads (51.2 million total) in October (up ~40%)

GoodBytes

Microsoft is announcing to developers, got 1.7 million downloads in October, up by almost 40% since June, both free and paid.

In total, 51.2 million apps were downloaded during the month-long period in the store.

According to information Microsoft provides to developers, the Windows Store marketplace for applications on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 racked up roughly 1.7 million daily downloads, both free and paid, in October, a 38.56% increase since June. Microsoft’s dataset, located on the company’s developer portal, indicates that around 51.2 million applications, again free and paid, were downloaded during the month-long period. While that figure represents growth for Microsoft, the company lags steeply behind its classic rival Apple.

Microsoft breaks out download rates for Windows Store applications by category, subcategory, free, paid, and even by country and gender if you want to see that information. I ran the data for the following months in 2013: January, February, June, and October: January because it was a peak for app downloads, coming the month after the holiday season in which PC sales tick higher; February to measure the post-holiday trough; June to check in during the summer; and October because it is the most recent provided full month.

This indicate a great start for Windows 8 Apps, and indicates more and more people interested in Modern UI.

Is it good numbers? Compared to Apple and Android, of course not, but it does indicate a steady and growing increase in downloads, which is good news, as it means it attracts developers to make apps for Windows 8, and increase their quality. It also does show that people like the Start Screen environment.

Windows Phone and Windows 8 are constantly improving. Microsoft is putting in an honest effort but will it be enough?

Good news for windows. They desperately need to grow their app and hardware ecosystem.

I really like Windows 8.1 and I use modern UI for Fabook,Twitter, and Music.
I hope that we will see some new apps and better apps, because alot of them are crappy.

Well there would have been an increase in October because everyone that wanted to upgrade from W8 to 8.1 had to download it through the windows store. Cunning MS very cunning but I see what you did there ;)

I looked those two up and found them on Google Play. Superphoto why cap the max resolution at 1280x800? Wtf? It looks like a cool app though, that aside.

3D anatomy I don't have an issue with but it's $5.14 on the play store, which is the weirdest price I've ever seen on an app.

Have been seeing more common apps being released onto Windows Store. Hope that they will continue to expand and give Windows a better experience. :)

My preorder of the Lumia 1520 will come with a $50 Windows store gift card.  I wonder if they count those towards their total for paid downloads.

Like all new tech things, there will be a knee jerk reaction and a loud outcry from the die hard nerds that don't like change,  but with an overview from the general market it soon shows us that these things are rarely the disasters you hear about on forums.  When companies remove the last of the XP machines from service we will see another spike in win 8 and overall pc sales.

Still a long way before i would even consider buying a Windows 8/8.1 RT tablet... Still no Youtube official app, still no support for mkv and other more or less exotic video containers, IE11 is still freezing when you press start (why would you want to play a youtube music video in background?) and, of course, an imperial but tone of useless apps in the store. Windows 8.1 is a great OS, but only in desktop usage.
