Meh... 150$ is pretty low for a decent 5.1 setup IMO.

The real question is: given your pricepoint, would you prefer a decent 2.1 setup or a crappy 5.1 one? Third answer: save money for a better setup.

Headphones would also be a good alternative, you can find some HiFi headphones with good soundstage (AKG K701...) for less than 200$

i'd advice headphones or the second hand market. i myself got the high end of the low range. that cost me €150 for the speakers, another €150 for the sub and €50 for a second hand amplifier so only $150 is probably a bit to little .

Gread headphones, I'd say I like them even more than the K701. how much were you satisfied of your  Logitech 5.1 z506 kit?

Pretty well actually. I know it's the low end for the 5.1 setup and I can bump my budget to $200. http://m.ebay.com/itm/Logitech-Z906-5-1-Surround-Sound-Speaker-System-RT5-980-000467-UG-/321946237486?hash=item4af57dba2e%3Ag%3AGfcAAOSwfZ1Wayuj&_trkparms=pageci%3A02a48d04-0d81-11e7-9321-74dbd18000a0%7Cparentrq%3Aec4fd97b15a0a357195ff06ffffac6d7%7Ciid%3A4

You're going to get all buck and no bang for $150. Have fun, though.

Thank you for your help. Honestly I'll treasure and value your opinion highly in my up coming considerations of what 5.1 I ought to get.....

Meaning, save more, set sights on 2.0, or close your eyes and pick because there is nothing worth singling out in the 5.1 realm for $150 or less. Logitech, Klipsch, Monoprice, or worse; pick your poison.

What's wrong with Klipsch? Genuinely asking as I planned to get Klipsch speakers for my AVR. Or is it just about the Klipsch kits around 150$?
But yes, you're right. OP is better saving his money for a future upgrade.

Klipsch "higher" end models (more like mid range speakers) have been known for very sharp highs, the new models don't seem to have that problem. If you buy new then in the 150$ you don't really get much of a speaker in terms of quality, but if you look used you can sometimes find some really good deals, but those speakers also often need an amp.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Feel free to pm me if you have a question for me or quote me. If you want to hear what I have to say about something just tag me.
