H4CKBOOK-E

2007 White Macbook OVERHAUL!

"probably not what you were expecting."

ok so first of all my bad for the early post thing. there is also not a shot of the computer before... oops. i didn't initially intend to post this log but had enough pics and decided to.

this is my white macbook from like '07 or '08 that has been running strong every since i purchased it. bear in mind i've kept this computer in as close to pristine condition as possible with a laptop that actually sees some travel. despite my precaution it seems there was at one point a spill to the keyboard which i was unaware of other than the fact that some of my keys stuck.  <_<

well enough talk lets get into what actually went down.

this is probably the closest to stock picture i have. just runnin' some tests.

knew this would be here hah, that cant be good!

post-5387-0-14024500-1384393002_thumb.jp

here too!

post-5387-0-53202500-1384393038_thumb.jp

so by this point i had the fan, hdd, odd out and really started thinking about what i was going to do. i then ending up deciding to replace the thermal paste on the heat sink, replace the fan, replace the speakers, and opted to leave out the odd in favor of adding more storage.

post-5387-0-62535900-1384393017_thumb.jp

here is everything basically gutted once i made the decision to wrap the whole thing in carbon fiber!!  B)

post-5387-0-69165800-1384393027_thumb.jp

a fresh fan and some new speakers! man do these speakers go out quickly...

post-5387-0-51709400-1384393074_thumb.jp

the storage adapter i used with a tiny bit of modding.

post-5387-0-51941300-1384393980_thumb.jp

a couple of shots of the bottom case all wrapped up.

post-5387-0-31540000-1384393062_thumb.jp

and here it finally is, nearly complete!

OS installed and ready to run some benchmarks. in the end i chose to run two hard drives (the original one and another salvaged from a dead computer) in RAID 0. i chose this configuration because it was what i had. in the future i may opt for an ssd/storage drive and with BF around the corner that may happen.

post-5387-0-61060500-1384393129_thumb.jp

this topcase though... this will have to go.

post-5387-0-31192400-1384393145_thumb.jp

i have been meaning to borrow a camera from a friend who owns a better one but haven't gotten around to it. when i get my hands on an SLR i'll snap some pics of the final product and what i ended up doing with the topcase. i will also post the specs then. i can post some benchmark stuff if anyone is interested. its nothing mind blowing though i'll say lol.

look for updates!

Hmm, Why wouldn't you just wait until you had all of the pictures and so on to post your build log? Or at least just post the specs and plans for the build to be.

Please don't just make topics that seem like spam, they will probably just get taken down.. (Sorry if that's a little harsh)

Ugh i mistakenly assumed i would be able to switch the topic to private after creating it; i wanted to have everything formatted perfectly.

i'm looking for all of the pictures and will update tonight or tomorrow if i don't have the drive on hand.

@ hiyayhi & hans: duly noted.

Ok, Thank you.

I'm pretty sure you can't make a topic private but it may be a cool idea for the future. Try to suggest it to a mod or something. @Windspeed36 might help with this one.

wow thanks for the friendly response and since you suggested, i may just do that.

and on that note i'm writing the post as soon as this one is finished.

  • 3 weeks later...

So I'm finally i'm updating this and here is the final product!

post-5387-0-36453400-1386146571_thumb.pn

so what did i decide to do about that dirty old crappy topcase?

post-5387-0-40272400-1386146929_thumb.jp

so not what i initially planned, but overall i like how it turned out. i was initially going to keep my white topcase, clean it thoroughly, and replace the keys with a fresh set of black ones! i even thought about spraying a couple custom ones. like the WASD ones or something?

post-5387-0-45051700-1386147180_thumb.pn

instead i just ended up replacing the topcase with a whole new black one. thankfully dirt wont show up nearly as much on this one!

post-5387-0-72181100-1386147309_thumb.pn

in this picture i have the case on; it's just a clear spec one. i don't think i like it and i don't even know if this dinosaur computer warrants having a case. hah

post-5387-0-43240600-1386147385_thumb.pn

here is a close up on the display hinge that you can see is also wrapped up. you may also notice the lack of apple branding.

post-5387-0-47791300-1386147460_thumb.pn

i thought about spraying the display bezel in a cool pattern as well, but it was just too crappy and falling apart. i couldn't even get every clip secured! i broke a couple too, but i don't feel replacing something so trivial on such an old rig would be worth it.

post-5387-0-25175400-1386147607_thumb.pn

clearly i can't focus a camera either.

some of the cuts around the I/O. not super clean but hey... whatever...

post-5387-0-95174100-1386147700_thumb.pn

a couple more glam shotz of this thing sittin' pretty.

post-5387-0-31606000-1386147858_thumb.pn

post-5387-0-21522700-1386147877_thumb.pn

and thats it.

i honestly don't even know how much longer i will use this computer. hopefully it lives long enough to get me through school. lol

however if i do end up throwin down for a new laptop i will likely do some mods and post another build log! anyways drop me a comment and let me know what you think, or of course flame on

PEACE.

hey windspeed! cool to see you around these parts.

He should put a Cherry MX keyboard in there just for the lols.

Be sure to run bootcamp :P

lol i wish right!

and let me tell you attempting to bootcamp this was such a nightmare! basically bootcamp doesnt play well with raid and wont let you install to a secondary drive. then i installed both operating systems on the drive in the optical bay which is only a sata II interface... fail city. its impossible to switch the OS' over to the other drive without unplugging the storage option and lets just say its no party opening up this thing. since i've just restored the raid partition and restored from a backup. /sigh
