Hi there,

I have a question for anyone on here, I hope its not a silly question, but if I bought a power supply (which was a lot say 1000w) and is an overkill, would the PC and its components

suffer (blowup or fry) or will it just balance the power out?

Thanks

No it will not cause any harm to your PC components. Generally though when you have such a large disparity in wattage available to wattage used, the efficiency rating is sub par from what the PSU is actually rated at.

Say you have 1000w PSU and it is rated at 80+ gold.  You now have your system up and is using 450w from the wall. You are effectively hurting the PSU efficiency more. I am trying to find a good explanation to link to you to explain it, so more to follow.

If you get more than you need, for example 1000w and your system only drains lets say 500w.

Its not going to be as efficient if you get the same model but at 650w.

Power supplies tend to be more energy efficient when close to their peak ratings or near of. There should be graphs online for your particular model so you can use that to determine how much/less efficient it is if you go 1000w.

Actually most will be more efficient at about 50% load. It will of course vary between models

That's an F in the profile pic

That's cool. I was curious. The reason I'm asking is I'm thinking about getting 2 GTX 1080s in the future and I didn't know if I had to replace the current PSU I've got.

The current one I've got is an ANTEC 80+ Bronze 620W PSU. Is that powerful enough?

It probably is but I wouldn't personally run two 1080s on an old group-regulated unit. Get an EVGA 750G2 which can often be found for under $100 which is a steal.
