Some go little extreme on the "racing" style I will agree but some aren't so "racey".

I think they do it so the chair sitting position is more defined. Restricting the movement of the user, and so helping reduce the possibility of a user sitting in a bad position with incorrect posture.

My year old DxRacer still feels and looks brand new... It is very comfortable and the recline feature is something that most office chairs don't have. So from my point of view it trumps a $250 Staples Chair. The gaming chairs are expensive and not everyone is going to spend $400, but some can and do - all the people that have used my chair love it, but only one person actually bought one for themselves, they like theirs too.

You're just looking at the wrong kind of chairs. Most ergonomic chairs will look nothing like a racing car chair. Gaming chairs? They'll look like that because they think that's what the kids want to see. They're not the most friendly chairs for your back.

If you have that kind of money, I strongly suggest grabbing an open box Herman Miller chair from eBay.
