WAIT A MINUTE, that wasn't 8k... IT WAS BETTER

Chronified

Well, it flew past all of us and none of us caught it.... but me.

I'm sure we've all seen the "gaming at 8k" video that Linus put out quite a few months ago.

I finally got around to watching it and something caught my attention..

..if you read my post title you have probably figured it out.

This isn't actually 8k ! It's FREAKING 16K !

k is just a term for how many times 1080p will fit on a display.

4k being 3840x2160=8,294,400 , which is exactly 4x 1920*1080=2,073,600

So, if you took 4x4k monitors like he did in the video, you'd be multiplying your total amount of pixels by 4, making this setup a total of 33,177,600 pixels (holy crap).

Now, divide that 33,177,600 pixels by 1080p(2,073,600) and what do you get?

16k

Time for another "we were wrong" video, at least it's not bad news this time !

I don't think that's how they say 4k or 8k. It's more of an approximation of the number of horizontal pixels. Hence why 1440p is sometimes called 2.5k, since it has about 2.5k horizontal pixels.

It's not a term of how many times 1080p fits it in, it is a term for (roughly) how many horizontal pixels there are. That's why 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) and DCI 4K (4096 × 2160) are both 4K resolutions.

8K is anything that is roughly 8000 pixels horizontally. Technically 8000 x 200 is an 8K resolution with an aspect ratio of 40:1

2x Vertical

2x Horizontal

The '2k' or '4k' or '8k' comes from the horizontal pixel count, not the total pixels or anything like that.

4K and 8K (many resolution terms in general) are confusing and somewhat poorly defined.

4x 1080p has adopted the name 4K UHD or just UHD, mainly from manufacturers who use it to advertise. There are multiple 4K resolutions (technically anything with around 4K horizontal pixels), so 4K on its own doesn't really mean much about the total resolution.

Hahaha I ran into the same mistake a few weeks ago. He just adds another vertical display (2160 + 2160) and another horizontal display (3840 + 3840 = 7680 = 7.68k ~ 8k) and since you need another monitor to make it a rectangle so It looks more like an actual monitor.

Here I come with my horrible sketches again :D (Hope It helps lol)
