Cloud Server?

Hey just a quick question, I was wondering if there's a way to create a "cheap" cloud server for me and my friends to store things on. Cheap meaning a max of about $200.

Do you want to host it your self?

 

You can just get a old desktop and set it up.

 

If you want it hosted, just rent a small aws node.

Ya i would like to host it myself but i'm not sure how the whole server thing works. Like i dont know what hardware i have to have or anything. I mainly just work on / build PCs not servers.

there is nothing special about servwers, there just normal system.

 

Id just get a system, and install linux and owncloud.

no. I have this server and it is a steal. run 4-6 of those 150gb drive and run a raid 5/ you should be fine

ok so do i have to purchase the raid card sepretaly or is that in the system already?

Hey,

 

If you're looking to host your own cloud storage & services, I would suggest using an old PC, or building a PC with a low level processor, 2gb-4gb RAM, and no discrete graphics card. Rackmount servers can run loud and use up your power bill.

 

OwnCloud is a great solution. Once you have a PC, you can use this tutorial to install it step-by-step: https://mycloset.tech/tutorials/installing-owncloud-on-ubuntu-server/

Another $$ factor would be your public dns/IP, you might need to explorer/research some dynamic DNS solution, I believe there should be some free ones out there.

Second would be, how do you want to access it? good old FTP? SFTP?

 

Don't get intimidated by the word SERVER, after all, they are just regular computers with dedicated tasks assigned to them.
