480 4gb vs 1060 3gb

So I'm building a computer SOON ( in like 3 days maybe) and I have no clue which one is better. I want to play triple A titles like GTA 5 and stuff but I'm not sure which card will run better. I also play some light titles as well but I'm interested in more demanding titles as well. This will probably be my long term computer and I won't be upgrading for a while. If you want the specific model I'm debating between its the GIGABYTE Windforce GTX 1060 3gb model (NOT G1 GAMING) and the MSI RX 480 4gb GAMING X.If you could reply with a decision and an explanation that would be helpful. Thanks! :). CPU : i5 7500) MOBO: MSI B250M VD) RAM: 8gb Kingston HyperX Fury) GPU: Undecided hence this post) PSU: 500w EVGA 80+ White) Case: Carbine SPEC-02). I'm a fellow Canadian like my dood Linus.

If you have no intent of playing using OpenGL, get the 480. If you do plan to play something with OpenGL, get the 1060. AMD's drivers since the fury cards cause horrid artifacting under the right (or wrong) lighting conditions with OpenGL applications.

The 3 gig 1060 doesn't use the same chip as the 6 gig 1060 (chip in 3gig is worse than the one in the 6 gig)

The 4 gig 480 uses the same chip as the 8 gig 480

Country? The GX card is decent, and 4GB 480 > 3GB 1060 every time.

The 6GB 1060 has more CUDA cores than the 3GB version whereas the 4GB 480 is on par in everything but VRAM with its big bro.

idk

not so easy. 480 is a better buy overall...but if he have a weak cpu, it will get bottlenecked by the 480 easily. nvidia uses resources more efficiently. need to know the processor he is running

The GTX 1060 3gb is a cutdown slower version of the 1060 6gb, the RX480 4gb and 8gb are almost equal, with almost no cutdown and none noticeable while gaming.

While only needing a maximum of 4gb in gaming, a RX480 4gb is almost equal to a GTX 1060 6gb depending on the game, so imagine a gtx 1060 3gb vs the 480.

This is the RX480 8gb vs the GTX 1060 6gb

This is the RX470 vs the GTX 1060 3gb.

Pick a RX470/480 or a GTX 1060 6gb, but a GTX 1060 3gb is absolutely pointless.

Thanks you guys! There's a deal right now that gives me Doom for free if I buy the 480 so i think the decision is clear now. Appreciate it tons. Thanks for the explanations!

I have gone through the same thing as you a week ago.

(i got it loving it) get the GTX 1060 3gb - you wont notice a difference - it will be cheaper and will be more than enough for almost most of the 1080p games some will say games use more than 4gb ram on ultra but this card wont be running ultra in latest games anyways so go for cheaper gtx1060 and you can use is for cuda applications to if not using it later.

for 4gb rx480 if it is not cheaper dont go for it or 8gb one is also waste of money no game will be able to run with 8gb vram usage with decent frames at 1080p anyways.

even 2gb card will run same in most 1080p titles.

for cpu even I5 6402p will be enought for you up to GTX1070 if you upgrade later which is overkill for most 1080p.

good luck.
